Bash Back – the story of the Queer Mafia is getting its first printed issue. An artful revenge thriller from Gullo/Hercs/Pavlov team.
About this project
Bash Back Comic is: “…an outré, madness, a tragic, cruel fantasy, an eruption of inner rage, on how the oppressed desperately dream of being the oppressor.” – Michael Swift
Bash Back is a weekly online comic centered on the machinations of the New York City branch of The Family – a secret organization with the sole purpose of keeping all queers in the world safe and protected – by any means necessary. The comic makes use pulpy sex and violence as a form of catharsis (because sometimes you want to see punches and assassinations to feel a little less helpless in this world of structural inequality and hate crimes.) We were also interested in telling a story that provided the revelatory joy of seeing our fellow queer people in positions of power, displaying hyper-competence and a united front in overcoming any obstacle – many of which are adapted from obstacles we face in real life.
For the past year, we’ve been releasing Bash Back online and will continue to do so even when the books are printed. We are committed to keeping the comic free and available for all. We want to reach as wide an audience as possible and avoid making it inaccessible to anyone who might need it.
But now we’re ready to print issue 0! The book is going to be big and beautiful. It will have the entire issue 0 in it, as well as never-before-seen art by our official artist, Fyodor Pavlov, an original short story by one of the writers, Kelsey Hercs, and pin-ups by our writer/graphic designer Lawrence Gullo, as well as a secret (profoundly nerdy) collaboration between Kelsey and Lawrence. We’re so excited to finally get to hold this book in our hands – it’s a dream a long time in the making. However, we need your help to make it happen…
Risks and challenges
We’re committed to getting the comic out to you as soon as possible – there’s nothing more vexing than waiting months for something you pre-ordered! We’ll have copies at Flame Con (http://www.flamecon.org ) for you to pick up.
With all our busy schedules and limited funds, we’ll also work hard to get those t shirts designed and ordered ASAP so that everyone will have their prizes shipped by October. Woohoo!
