Mother and Child Oral Hygiene for Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela’s birthday is on 18 July, and as Sandton’s leading blog, we want to devote our 67 minutes – one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service – to make a difference in the oral hygiene of 1000 mothers and children in disadvantaged areas through the Rhiza Mobile Clinic project.

About This Project

1000 Oral Hygiene Packs for Mandela Day

On assignment earlier this year, The Sandton Times came across the Rhiza Mobile Clinic and was blown away by the incredible work this organisation and its dedicated team does.

In conversation, Lydia and Rush, two of the ladies on duty that day, expressed the desperate need for items like toothpaste, toothbrushes and other oral hygiene items that would help the mothers and children in the community they serve keep their teeth clean and their mouths healthy, as most patients to the clinic do not have the knowledge or financial means to do something as important as brush their teeth twice a day.

As Sandton’s leading blog, we wanted to use our 67 Minutes for Mandela Day and until the end of August 2016 to raise funds and donate 1000 Oral Hygiene packs to the Rhiza Mobile Clinic, to ensure the mothers and children of the communities they serve will be able to smile brightly everyday and improve their oral hygiene.

What is the Rhiza Mobile Clinic?

The Rhiza Mobile Clinic is currently being deployed to service the populous townships of Diepsloot, Cosmo City and Orange Farm, in Northern Johannesburg.

The main goal of the clinic is to improve the quality of life and provide access to health services, particularly access to maternal-child healthcare and dental care.

The Mobile Clinic vehicle, custom built on a mid-sized truck frame, operates as a “mini-health clinic on wheels” and provides an extremely versatile platform to deliver primary health care services, education and counseling. Measuring 10 meters by 2.5 meters, the mobile clinic is divided into two parts: a maternal and child care section and a dental care section.

The Mobile Clinic is staffed by an-all women team of a registered nurse, a dental therapist, a dental assistant and a driver/ assistant, as one of the goals of the project is to empower and uplift women.

Through personal and corporate contributions, we hope to donate as many mothers and children with good quality Oral Hygiene products to ensure they truly have something to smile about!

Our Tipping Point!

Once we reach our R36’000 tipping-point we will be able to help 300 mothers and children look after their oral health – anything over and above that will be amazing!
