Divertimento for Rope & Strings
An aerial music concert for rope, cello and violin.
Divertimento for Rope and Strings is a playful and unexpected performance collaboration between a prize winning aerial artist and two eminent classical musicians. We have accepted an invitation by Tête à Tête Opera Company to perform a showcase of the piece at the Cubitt Square Festival, at Kings Cross, London, on August 7th. Please help us take our performance to the Festival and secure a future for this piece by donating and sharing this campaign.
Raising funds for Showcase for Divertimento for Rope & Strings
Gisele Edwards in partnership with Riotous Company
Divertimento for Rope and Strings is a playful and unexpected performance collaboration between a prize winning aerial artist and two eminent classical musicians. It looks at how we experience music three dimensionally, not simply aurally but viscerally, physically, spatially. Playing with themes of body, movement and space, it considers at how simple bodies can, through movement, give rise to something as ethereal as music.
We have accepted an invitation by Tête à Tête Opera Company to perform a showcase of the piece at the Cubitt Square Festival, at Kings Cross, London, on August 7th. This will allow the piece to be seen by invited commissioning partners, and so – we trust – receive the proper funds to turn it into a full scale performing piece that will be toured to theatre, music, circus and arts audiences at regional venues and festivals.
We have raised two thirds of the money to do this through generous in-kind support and grants; however to make it happen we still need to raise a minimum of £2500 to cover transport, accommodation, technicals and a producer’s fees. More than this will allow us to take the piece further; to hire a producer to lead on future commissions, bring on board a second aerialist, purchase the equipment we need (currently borrowed), and pay the balance of the creative team’s fees.
Please help us take our performance to the Festival and secure a future for this piece by donating and sharing this campaign.
Please come and watch the show at the Cubitt Square Festival at Kings Cross, on August 7th at 7pm! It’s free!
About the project
In Divertimento for Rope & Strings a classical concert unravels.. and we step inside the music…
The project began 7 years ago when Gisele Edwards, puzzled by the formality and lack of movement in classical concerts, invited a director from Jacques Lecoq, the famous theatre school in Paris, and a Baroque cellist, to look at how the rope that she dances on might convey the movement and sound of the music created by the cellist’s strings, and so offer audiences a more visceral experience of live classical and contemporary music.
Gisele is now working in partnership with Riotous Company in bringing the idea to fruition. The video shows some of the ideas they’re working with.
Who we are
The small company comprises a French, English, Danish, Cypriot, Japanese, American and Spanish; the project is hence a simple illustration of the rich harvest yielded by cross-cultural collaboration in the UK.
