Margarita’s story

I’m a Detroiter, artist, and multi-medium designer who spent the earlier half of my twenties dreaming up creative ideas for activating underused spaces with creative businesses and pop-up shops.

I’ve always had a longing to use my background in design and passion for entrepreneurship to help others. It’s why, since 2009, I’ve worked to inspire young people to live in Detroit and help shape their communities through entrepreneurship. It’s also why, in 2010, I launched a place-making design agency to help others young creatives plan and open their very own pop-ups.

Bohomodern was conceptualized in 2009 as my lifelong dream of launching my own lifestyle brand and vision combining my love of pattern, passion for travel, and pursuit of beauty in accessible, everyday objects. In my original Bohomodern collection, I custom designed colorful, whimsical products: posters, tableware, pillows, clothing, stationary, planters, and decor–many with themes local to Detroit.

With the help of my seamstress mom, I launched the signature Bohomodern collection in 2010 at my first pop-up shop inside of the 71 Garfield Artists Lofts building. Later that year Bohomodern launched its online store and holiday pop-up shop featuring collection originals, as well as an array of vintage, found, recycled and new homewares, clothing, accessories, gifts, and other objects for women, men, kids, and home.

In 2013 & 2014 I took a short hiatus from Bohomodern to work on my latest creation, a now 3-year-old daughter, Posey. In 2015 I was back in the swing of things, and Bohomodern became a 2015 Hatch Detroit Semi-Finalist.

This summer Bohomodern soft-opened on the far eastside of Detroit, inside the new MASH neighborhood social collision hub. With your help, Bohomodern’s Grand Opening will feature an eclectic mix of clothing, gifts, and decor for men, women, kids and home!

Business Description

In early 2015 Bohomodern went back to its roots, renting a studio space to work on a 2016 collection. The new collection will step outside of Bohomodern’s usual fare and into total in-house product development and manufacturing, using new materials like metal and wood.

This summer Bohomodern soft-launched inside of MASH, a mixed-use neighborhood space! The shop features an expanded selection of outside label products to complement its in-house collections. Selection will include clothing, furniture, decor, and gifts for women, men, kids and home. The store will also introduce an expansion of the Bohomodern brand with Bohomini for kids and Bohomodern Studio’s one-of-a-kind original art.

Bohomodern products are an expression of our customer’s appreciation for artfulness and good design. Through a permanent Bohomodern store, I hope to impart a sense of creativity, optimism and discovery to each customer. Bohomodern will be an escape from the everyday; a source of inspiration and delight, where innovative merchandising, customer centricity and a curated array of socially responsible, thoughtfully crafted products come together to create an unimagined experience.

The goal is to not just be a store, but a colorful and quirky place that people will want to come in and touch: grownups will come in to dream, kids will come in to create, everyone will come in and be inspired (and make use of our free Wi-Fi). With a three-generation team (daughter, mom, and grandma) and your loan, Bohomodern will create an environment that is fun, forward-thinking, and family-friendly!

What is the purpose of this loan?

This loan helps Bohomodern get the needed capital to begin to purchase the fixtures and inventory we need in order to launch our Grand Opening, make money and thus pay wages for our first employees. This is the opportunity we need to truly prove that our concept is profitable and works in our chosen neighborhood.

The loan would also personally allow me to be self-employed, support my daughter, leave behind an entrepreneurial legacy, and inspire other local entrepreneurs to continue to dream big!
