Advancing the Science of DNA Testing of Rape Kits

We are a consortium of scientists and business people who have identified novel technology that was developed at the Flinders Universtiy Adelaide, Australia which can address the problem of contaminated rape kit samples.  These contaminated samples often lead to questionable DNA identification which is why many rape cases are not prosecuted or do not lead to convictions.  This technology is also particularly suited for “cold” rape kit samples.  With over 400,000 untested rape kits in the U.S. this is an increasing problem.   In addition, this new technology can effectively analyze gang rape samples where there are multiple perpetrators; in the U.S. 21% of rapes are gang rapes.

The technology has been proven with laboratory samples, but to be accepted in criminal prosecutions it must be validated with samples that are consistent with actual crime scene evidence.  We plan to validate the technology with samples that are certified to mimic crime scene samples at the Serological Research Institute in Richmond, California, which is one of the few licensed criminal laboratories in the U.S. that can conduct research of this nature.  We are raising the funds to contract with them for the validation testing.
