We are hoping to raise £10,000 to fund the construction of our eco burial ground, Hay Meadow Burials.
Our idea is to create a natural burial ground nestled in a quiet valley in Radnorshire, in Wales. Richard, Sarah, Tom, Amy and baby Sam, moved to Busnant Farm in 2007 which was a huge challenge to restore. We started up our own flock of sheep, pigs and soon had a selection of poultry. We are pretty near self-sufficient now eating mainly our own meat, poultry and eggs. We have a huge veg patch and a freshly re-planted orchard, which is run organically. The whole farm uses very limited chemicals and we avoid fertilizers, hence why we have lots of wildlife, especially hedgehogs.
A natural burial is where an un-embalmed body is laid to rest in a biodegradable coffin or shroud in a grave which is in a natural environment. We want to provide a gentle and environmentally friendly option for people of all beliefs and faiths, who want their final resting place to have as little an impact on the environment as possible.
The meadow that would be home to the burial ground is not overlooked by another property and looks out for miles over open countryside. For a number of years, the meadow has been kept as a hay meadow, allowing a variety of wild flowers to grow there. By introducing more native flowers our aim is to turn the meadow into an old-fashioned, traditional hay meadow which will help to support a wide variety of wildlife.
If we reach our target, we will use the funds to:
- Construct a visitor car park
- Build fencing and hedgerows around the meadow
