CELEBRATING THE WORK OF ONE OF THE MAJOR CALLIGRAPHERS OF OUR TIME
New Yorkers or any of the city’s millions of visitors who walked along Madison Avenue in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s know her masterful posters for the Morgan Library. Scribes in the U.S. and abroad know her through her celebrated workshops. She is Alice Koeth, known professionally simply as Alice, and although she is one of the most respected calligraphers in the world today, relatively few of her works have been published in book form. The vast majority of her graphic output remains unseen and uncollected.
With your help, this first-ever collection of Alice’s work will change that. Jerry Kelly has compiled, with Alice’s active participation, over 140 illustrations, showing the depth and breadth of her artistry. Jerry’s introduction and Donald Jackson’s eloquent appreciation set her work in context.
A BOUNTIFUL SELECTION OF HER WORK
Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Alice’s artistry exemplifies taste, technique, wit, and her own unique graphic style. A keen understanding of craft, respect for tools, and interest in historical forms have contributed to her command of various calligraphic styles, written with extraordinary skill. Whether using Coit and Automatic pens or the smallest of Speedball nibs, this versatility enabled her to tackle all manner of calligraphic design problems.
Her work has inspired several generations of calligraphers, and we are eager to share it with you. Alice has opened her own personal archives so, in addition to her mature and later work, the book contains charming early works from the 1950s, as well as several sketches and preliminary layouts which offer a rare glimpse into Alice’s working process. The Morgan Library has graciously photographed a dozen of her very special posters from their archives, not seen for decades, especially for this publication.
EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTION VALUES
The book will be produced to the highest standards, printed by quality offset lithography using fine line screens on archival uncoated paper. Many pieces professionally photographed especially for this publication. The 8 x 11.5″ hardbound book will be Smyth sewn and covered in imported book cloth, gold stamped on the front with a drawing by Alice and on the spine with the title. It will contain over 140 reproductions of Alice’s work, most in color and many full-page.
A CHANCE TO ACQUIRE SPECIAL ITEMS
We’ll be producing several deluxe editions in association with the Alice project; each of which will be accompanied by special additional items.
With the DELUXE EDITION: A separate portfolio containing ten reproductions of Alice’s teaching charts, assembled and reprinted actual size solely for this publication: rustics, Roman caps, uncial, Irish uncials, textura, rotunda, simple Roman, Roman bookhand, italic, & italic swash caps.
With the EXTRA DELUXE EDITION: The portfolio as above, PLUS an additional 5 charts: sloped Roman caps, Roman caps (II), Irish uncial (II), uncial variant & cursive italic. PLUS an original sheet of Alice’s pointed pen script on yellow tissue. Alice wrote these lines as preparation for a project for the UN. PLUS TWO facsimile giclée-printed reproductions of Alice’s posters for the Morgan Library: 15th Century Art of the Netherlands (20 x 24 inches) and Icelandic Sagas (20 x 24 inches).
With the SUPER DELUXE EDITION: The portfolio with 15 teaching charts. PLUS original calligraphy by Alice’s demonstrating a couple of styles of calligraphy. PLUS FOUR facsimile giclée-printed reproductions of Alice’s posters for the Morgan Library: 15th Century Art of the Netherlands (20 x 24 inches), Icelandic Sagas (20 x 24 inches), Fox Talbot (12 x 20 inches) & British Literary Manuscripts (20 x 24 inches).
As with our previous Kickstarter project, The Sketchbooks of Hermann Zapf, we are looking to raise a minimum that represents only about half of the cost of producing the book. We would like everyone who cares about beautiful letters to have the opportunity to acquire this compilation of the work of a major artist, so we have set a goal of $22,000. This would be a fraction of the production costs, but in combination with your support we are willing to partially fund the project ourselves, in order to help it reach fruition. We are confident that even if we raise only the minimum amount, we will be able to sell enough copies after the Kickstarter campaign to recoup our expenses, but even if that does not turn out to be the case we will be glad to have produced this tribute to a great artist. If we do reach the over $40,000 cost of producing the project all the better, and if we are fortunate enough to surpass that goal then we can add extra features to the book, as we did with the Zapf/Sketchbook project.
Over the past few months, we have photographed and scanned all the images needed. The introduction is also final; corrected by Alice and ready to print. The illustrations and most of the text layouts are complete, with only some front matter and back matter still to be finished.

Risks and challenges
The same team that is producing this volume also worked on the successful Hermann Zapf Sketchbook project, published on Kickstarter last year. With that campaign and decades of experience producing finely printed volumes for numerous clients, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Morgan Library & Museum, The Grolier Club, International Typeface Corporation, The Frick Collection, The Amon Carter Museum and The Society of Scribes, we’re confident we can meet the demands of the project. As with the Zapf Sketchbook project, Jerry Kelly has designed the book and will supervise production. We see very little risk for our backers.
