Ivy’s story

I’m a bee farmer and an engineer. I’m originally from the Island of Jamaica. My parents along with my 9 siblings migrated to the United States in the mid 1960s when I was about 4 years old. In college I majored in engineering. I spend 22 years working for Raytheon and IBM. I have 3 wonderful sons. I love to travel especially to indigenous areas (off the beaten path) and speaking to older people because the majority of then aren’t caught up in the need for lots of material things. Happiness to them comes from nature, loving and respecting each other and appreciating the creator’s gift to us. I’m a minimalist. My friends and family are in awe that I’ve lived most of my adult life without owning a TV. I’m an avid reader. I get up everyday at 5AM and read a number of publications (yes, I have internet service). Although I love science and engineering, I feel I’ve found my calling as a bee farmer. I get a lot of energy and inspiration when I’m tending to my bees. I especially love to educate my customers on my honey-derived products. Being an entrepreneur is challenging at times. My demand is greater than my supply because of lack of funding. The love for my products is what drives me, but my sleepless nights are due to the fear I have that I will not be able to keep up with demand.

Business Description

Ivyees “Everything Honey” produces honey based health and beauty products, with all natural ingredients from the tropical Islands of the Caribbean, North America, Africa and India. Our flagship is our three unique raw honey pollinations; load with natural vitamins and antioxidants, often attributed to better health. We also produce luxurious honey based hair and skin products that rejuvenate and restore with tropical plants and floral extracts. In addition we are working on a line of condiments; honey BBQ sauce, honey jerk season, salad dressing and a no sodium sweet and spicy dipping sauce. You can find our products in select Whole Foods locations. In the near future we will be offering unique and healthy gift ideas that can be conveniently ordered on line at Ivyees.com I started using raw honey because as a pre-diabetic I was concerned about my sweetener intake. Soon after becoming a bee farmer and producing the tropical honey my friends and family started enjoying not only the raw honey but also the honey-derived products I created. Before I know it my customer base grew larger than I ever anticipated. My customers were mostly women over the age of 40. In last year and a half Gen Xers and millennials are showing an appreciation for the natural energy source (glucose) and as a sustainable product (produced by bees) packaged in recycled containers. I’m most proud of the fact that raw honey is becoming very popular and consumers in the US are starting to really appreciates its many benefits.

My goal is to continue growing the business however the lack of funding to scale up is my biggest challenge. I have a great demand and limited supply due to lack of capital.

What is the purpose of this loan?

I’ll spend the money on honey inventory – 3000 Beauty supply ingredients and production- 6000 Staffing – 2000 Revenue will be increased by 32% for the raw honey line and 41% for the beauty care line. I’m struggling to meet my customer demand. I will be able to deliver the products to them and stay in business. My business is very competitive and there are many options out to choose from. I’ve worked hard to garner my customers trust and loyalty but they are not willing to walk around with dirty hair because my shampoo and condition is not available. My family has sacrifice a lot since I started my business. They are routing for me to reach success. This loan will get me on the path of that success. It will definitely relieve some of the stress.
