Maria’s story

A native to Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, I am the second oldest of 6 siblings to a single mother with no educational background. From a young age, I’ve had to balance work, studies, and my strong desire to meet the needs and serve my impoverished family. Having moved to Guadalajara with low wages, I was forced to find other sources of income aside from my full time job. From selling traditional food outside my home, to selling Polaroid pictures at weddings, I’ve always had the ability to change according to the needs I have to meet. On that journey I found myself in the United States, working at a meat packing plant in Southwest Minnesota as a single mother to two children of my own. From there, I began a small business as a video rental store. I saw the needs I had to meet in the community I lived in and after 20+ years have struggled, fought and evolved for the million dollar, multi-service Mini Market Lupita I now own and maintain. I hope to continue doing what I have learned to love. Thank you for your time and support.

More about this loan

Business Description

For more than 20 years, we’ve served the Hispanic community as an oasis of services here in our small town of Worthington, MN. When an influx of immigrants from Latin America came to Southwest Minnesota almost 30 years ago, many people felt out of place and had nowhere to go for their daily needs. We meet those needs. We serve as a multi-service building to cash checks, send money, pay bills, while also doubling up as a restaurant, meat department, bakery, and grocery store. We aim to be a more well-rounded and perfected service to our community but have been met with financial instability, deteriorating equipment, increasing turnover in staff and we are in need of support. Support to modernize our equipment, increase our staff, and strengthen our services to the community we are a part of.
