Modern valves for Humans.
Up to 40% of the US suffers from bad valves in the veins of legs, with no option for replacement. Innovein (YC W16) addresses this unmet medical need with a minimally invasive valve for the veins.
As people age, valves in the veins of their legs begin to function poorly. This allows blood to build up by the ankles due to gravity, leading to pain/swelling of the feet, skin discoloration, and ultimately open wounds by the ankles.
The beachhead market is the treatment of vein ulcers (google image), which are open wounds by the ankles. Over 4 million US patients are affected by the condition, have no definitive cure, and spend billions annually on just managing the condition.
