WHY ARE WE INVESTING IN KENNA SECURITY?

  • Addressing a critical pain point – cyber vulnerability overload – by prioritizing risks
  • Technology-driven engine understanding risk on human intelligence level at cloud software platform scale
  • Quadrupled its recurring revenue base in 2015 with numerous Fortune 500 clients
  • Veteran team backed by tier-one US venture firm, US Venture Partners

OurCrowd is investing in Kenna Security, a Silicon Valley-based startup helping customers prioritize the right cyber vulnerabilities by cutting through the noise faced by overloaded security professionals. Kenna quadrupled its annualized revenue run rate last year and is backed by top-tier Valley VC, US Venture Partners.

4 reason why we are investing in Kenna:

  • Helping find the needles in the cybersecurity haystack: Security professionals are overwhelmed with the number of vulnerabilities discovered every week in their systems. Large corporations can face millions of issues that could be potentially exploited by hackers, and are on average, taking months to resolve important ones. In fact, most attacks today take advantage of vulnerabilities that were already known to exist, but weren’t remediated in time. Kenna prioritizes security vulnerabilities so engineers can be sure they are investing precious time on the most potentially dangerous of the thousands or millions of issues they are bombarded with.
  • Kenna’s engine can understand risk with the intelligence of a human analyst, but at the scale of a cloud software platform: It is pioneering the use of machine learning and vast datasets to automate the process of identifying and estimating risk from a deluge of technical alerts. Kenna evaluates each vulnerability in light of recent hacker activity to identify the likeliness it might be used in an attack. It understands what a vulnerability might do to its customers’ systems based on their particular setup. From these and other processes, Kenna tells its customer how relevant and potentially dangerous a particular vulnerability is via a single risk score. As it grows its customer base and the number of vulnerabilities and exploits it has processed, Kenna’s system becomes more effective. OurCrowd believes this creates a compelling “data moat” around Kenna’s business, making it more difficult for upstarts to replicate the efficacy of Kenna’s risk scoring mechanisms as it scales.
  • Kenna is growing its multi-million dollar recurring revenue base rapidly with numerous Fortune 500 clients across a wide array of industries: Since launching in 2014, Kenna has sold into sector leaders in Financial Services, Healthcare, Hospitality, Food, Transportation and others. In 2015, the Company more than doubled its customer base with nearly 80 new logos, quadrupling its annualized run rate year on year. Moreover, Kenna has begun to move upstream as its service’s efficacy is borne out. With more Fortune 500-level customers, annual contract values have increased and upsell opportunities have expanded as Kenna is deployed in vast IT environments.
  • Behind Kenna is a team with decades of relevant experience and tier-one US venture firm, US Venture Partners: Kenna’s co-founder Ed Bellis was Orbitz’ former Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and was also formerly VP of Information Security at Bank of America. Co-founder Jeff Heuer is an experienced architect of web-scale applications for the likes of Sony, Citibank, GM and others. CEO Karim Toubba was brought on board to lead Kenna after nearly 20 years of executive-level experience in startups and major tech firms alike. Karim was formerly VP of Product and Strategy at Juniper Networks’ billion-dollar security business unit, VP Corporate Strategy of startup Ingrian Networks, and VP Product at Digital Island, where he was responsible for a $500M P&L. Kenna’s major investor is US Venture Partners, a Silicon Valley-based investor known for successful exits in enterprise software, networking and security such as Check Point (NASDAQ CHKP) Trusteer (acquired by IBM for ~$800M), Imperva (NYSE IMPV), Mellanox (NASDAQ MLNX), Box (NYSE BOX), Yammer (acquired by Microsoft for ~$1.2B), Vontu (acquired by Symantec for $350M) Dune Networks (acquired by Broadcom for ~$200M), among others.
