Idea

Dementia is a growing global problem, in the UK alone over 1 million people will be living with the disease by 2025 & over 2 million by 2050. The UK spends £26billion yearly, 2/3 is paid for by individuals & families (Alzheimer’s Society,2014). If a person with Dementia is lost & not found within the first 24 hours, there is an almost 50% chance they will not be found alive.

Finding individuals with Dementia financially strains services such as police & NHS.

Why use an insole?

Alzheimer’s is a regressive memory disease, which means the person with the disease regresses to an earlier time in their life. We believe other devices in the market fail for two main reasons.

Shoes are already ubiquitous in most cultures, because of this we can assume that our target users already have the habit of wearing them.

Compare this with a wristband or pendant solution for tracking, and the person with dementia may not recognise the device or understand how to use it, or even reject wearing it. In addition, the individual may not know that they are lost & in danger to activate the device. So we believe shoes are the best location for a device.
