Chocolate City Hair Studio & Day Spa.
My name is Latasha and I was born and raised in South Philadelphia, as the youngest of three. I went to BOK vocational high school in South Philadelphia and I continued my training at South Philadelphia Beauty Academy. I have always had a passion about doing hair, and the hair industry. When I was 17 years old, I started in a salon as a shampoo assistant. I slowly moved my way up, and in 1999 the business owner wanted to sell the salon. Not wanting to see it go, I decided to purchase the salon, called Chocolate City Hair Studio.
I have been the owner and operator since 1999 and have moved the salon from a and woodland ave to a larger location at 6217 Woodland Ave. During the past 16 years, my love of being a hair stylist never went away and I remain keeping myself up to date on trends and technologies in the industry. I have been a student at the South Philadelphia Beauty Academy and trained in New York, Atlanta, LA, and Washington DC.
Outside of training, I have also been lucky enough to earn several distinctions not only for my work, but my humanitarian efforts. throughout the city including a humanitarian award from the Philadelphia Full Figured Fashion Weekend, and an award from Unity in the Community and Universal Companies in recognition of Women’s History Month. I also earned an honorable citation from the Philadelphia City Council for my work in my salon, and with my community.
It’s been important for me to remain focused on my community by hiring local employees, supporting minority women, and supporting the economy. As well as offering things such as senior day where we give discounts and we also do a 2x a year pamper day for the seniors where we offer brunch, and free services.

More about this loan
Chocolate City Hair Studio & Day Spa has been owned and operated by myself for the past 16 years. Throughout the years I have attended trainings to stay current on the trends, as well as taking business classes with organizations in Philadelphia to help me expand the business. I moved my salon 5 years ago to a new location, and with the training and financial assistance from Entrepreneur Works and the City of Philadelphia’s Storefront Improvement Program I was able to turn my location into a bright, beautiful, and modern space for women and men to come relax.
Chocolate Hair Studio & Day Spa employs 6 stylists who provide hair and spa services. We focus on hair care, hair extensions, precision hair cuts and coloring, and blow outs. For spa services we offer facials, body hair removal, and nail care. I have been a teacher with Farouk Systems, and use all of their products in my salon, as well as offer them for retail. In addition to the services we provide, I also sell a small amount of fashionable clothing at the salon from buying trips I take to New York.
My future goal for the salon is to start my own hair, skin and nail vitamin that I can sell out of the salon, and that are also healthy for our bodies. As well as some of my own products.
What is the purpose of this loan?
I have already started working on some products for my own line that the salon will carry. To date, I’ve made progress with the hair extensions and I have purchased bulk hair extensions which I will be selling under the name of LRS Hair Extensions (Latasha Renee Sampson) to my clients.
The $5,000 Kiva Zip loan will help me purchase extensions, as well as the packaging and labeling that I will be selling my hair extensions in.
Years in operation: More than 5 years
A loan of $5,000 helps Latasha start my own line of hair extensions for my hair salon & spa to improve my business.
