Our ethos: The Island Project believes in unconditional regard for others, striving to offer a person centered approach with the ability to “think out of the box” to find solutions that will enable our young people to achieve their full potential.
About the project: The purpose of The Island Project is to offer a unique alternative farm based educational service for children and young people who, because of their varying complex needs, cannot attend full time mainstream school OR are at risk at age 16+ of being classified as NEET (Not in education, employment or training). Our Aim is to provide an innovative and comprehensive programme, which incorporates pastoral support, vocational practical development and academic qualifications within a farming & agricultural setting.
What we are fund raising for:
– Farming: feed for animals. The idea behind his project is to sow, plant and harvest vegtables which will supplement our animals diets. Our students will take part in every stage of this process which will include maintaining and learning about compost heaps, as well as planting a variety of vegtables, caring for them, harvesting them, before feeding them to our animals. All the while learners will receive embedded learning opportunities which can contribute towards a SEFL (Skills for Education and Further Learning) Aim Award Qualification in Sowing and Growing Techniques.
– Upcycling & Woodwork charity project. Although we are a social enterprise who receive no government backing, we feel as though it is important to give back to worthy causes. After a group discussion students identified several products that could be made in an environmentally friendly way, using recycled resources. Products such as pallet wood benches, rabbit hutches and tyre fitness bags could be made and sold at a profit. The students will learn about how to market these products, how to respond to ‘real’ customers and gain work experience whilst generating funds for a good cause. All profits will be donated to YestoLife (YES TO LIFE is a charitable initiative to open up a positive future for people with cancer in the UK by supporting an integrative approach to cancer care.) http://yestolife.org.uk/
– SLR Camera. To supplement our efforts we would like to invest in a high end camera. This would allow students to take excellent quality pictures of their work and increase the chances of selling their items. We are constantly updating our facebook and website pages, and again better quality images would help improve those services cosmetically. An SLR camera would also supplement the rewards offered in this fundraiser, allowing HD video recording and uploading to our YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9Vpz9CoKbrYh6H5HdcwUPg ). Students will as a result gain additional technical knowledge on how to use such a camera and develop techincal knowledge surrounding how to use this type of camera.
– Company Introduction Video. A professional look is becoming more and more paramount as the company grows bigger. The Quad video production team in Derby are kindly willing to help us develop a company video at a heavily discounted rate. The introduction video will mirror the professionalism we want to project to the community and will give visitors to our website, placing authorities and facebook page a first class explanation of who we are, and what we are trying to achieve.
Thank you for your support.
