This project aims to raise funds for maternity research / Este proyecto pretende conseguir fondos para investigacion en la maternidad.
Who am I? ¿Quién soy yo?
My name is Lucia and my ambition is to help women achieve healthier and happier births. I am a midwife and full time self-funding PhD student at the University of Central Lancashire. I am raising funds to be able to carry out this research project, which is a pilot clinical trial looking at the management of pregnant women whose waters have broken when labour haven’t started yet.
What is my research study about? ¿De qué trata mi estudio de investigación?
About 10% of pregnant women will experience pre-labour rupture of membranes at term (37-42 weeks), in other words their waters will break before labour starts. The time between the waters breaking and the start of active labour can be very different for each woman.
It is believed that when the waters do not break the risk of infection for the baby is about 0.5% and when the waters break the risk is about 1%. Due to this, two main approaches are considered: (1) Artificially inducing labour with drugs after about 24 hours (also called active management) and (2) Waiting for spontaneous labour to occur while monitoring the wellbeing of mother and baby (also called expectant management). We do not know which one is best. Our planned study aims to answer this question as this could be hugely beneficial for women and their babies.
Previous research has shown that the rates of infection in babies and mothers are similar when we induce labour compared to when we wait for labour to start naturally; It is therefore important to know which management is best because induction of labour also has its own risks. The planned study will explore the best way to increase the chances of a physiological (normal) labour and birth while reducing the risk of infection for both mother and baby resulting in healthier and happier births.

Why do I need funding and your help? / ¿Por qué necesito recaudar fondos y tu ayuda?
I am self funding the study and I am raising this money to be able to pay for some of the associated costs of the study.
With the funds that I raise, I will be able to pay for the cost of the laboratory material, such as group B streptococcus kits, etc..postage costs for the questionnaires, trasport and parking costs, learning resources, software, and the costs of “crowdfunder.co.uk”
How your donations will be used? ¿A qué se destinaran vuestras donaciones?
The funds raised here will cover the following costs:

Why obtaining funds is crucial?
Having the necessary funds will allow me to carry out this crucial and important research. Research that focuses on how to increase the rates of normal birth and at the same time reduce the rates of infection is really important for both women and their babies. This is because normal birth has many benefits for humanity in the short and long term.
I would be extremely grateful if you could support this project.
