Chief Executive Officer
David Williams is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Merkle Inc. He acquired Merkle in 1988 and became its 24th employee. Today, Merkle has more than 1700 employees in locations in the United States, China and United Kingdom, and is the nations largest and fastest-growing independent Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) agency.
Under Davids leadership, Merkle has sustained 25% annual growth over the last 20 years and was recognized as a market leader by Forrester Research in 2003, 2006 and 2007. In 2013, Advertising Age ranked Merkle as the 22nd largest agency of any discipline worldwide and the 7th largest CRM/Direct agency in the U.S. Also in 2012, Merkle was named to the Ten Agencies to Watch list in Advertising Ages A-List Issue. David was recognized by Winning Workplaces and Fortune Magazine as one of Americas Best Bosses of 2006, and was the 2007 Maryland Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
Chief Operating Officer
Zhengda Z Shen oversees Merkles analytics, data and technology businesses, core pillars of Merkle’s capabilities and value proposition. Z provides oversight for delivery of integrated marketing solutions using data, analytics, and technology to Merkle clients and is responsible for developing the business units future direction and growth strategy.
Z joined Merkle in 2000 and has served the company in a variety of positions. Prior to his current role, Z held the position of senior vice president of Quantitative Solutions Group. Earlier, Z was vice president and client group leader for Merkles financial services and insurance vertical markets.
Z has a MS in Applied Statistics from The Ohio State University and a MBA from Johns Hopkins University.
Chief Marketing Officer
Craigs responsibilities are three-fold: marketing, corporate development and management of Merkles customer experience business unit. In this role, Craig is charged with developing the enterprise marketing strategy and overseeing the team that manages all of Merkles marketing activities, encompassing demand generation, industry marketing, product marketing and marketing communications functions that include public relations, events and advertising. He also leads Merkles corporate development ventures, including the evaluation of acquisition opportunities, as well as championing the company’s innovation initiatives, in which new capabilities are incubated and developed.
Vice President Business Development
Dave Paulus is executive vice president of business development for Merkle and has led Merkles new business development strategies for the past 9 years. In his position, Dave creates and leads Merkles sales strategies and is responsible for the global pursuit of new business across all vertical markets. Dave also oversees the on-boarding of Merkles newest clients and the delivery of all services throughout this process.
Prior to joining Merkle in 2002, Dave helped develop and launch Return Path, Inc., a provider of strategic email solutions. As that companys vice president of sales and business development, Dave drove direct sales efforts and coordinated reseller partnerships.
He previously served as vice president of new market development at DoubleClick/Abacus, responsible for developing new products from the Abacus database and launching them into markets outside the traditional and core catalog clients.
Chandos is responsible for defining new solutions based on the needs of clients, prospects and key constituents and bringing those solutions to market. In addition, she is responsible for developing Merkle’s international value proposition and assessing capabilities in order to develop execution plans for building Merkle’s integrated customer marketing story within regions.
Chandos has 21 years of diverse industry experience, having spent 10 years at Experian where she held executive level positions in Marketing.
Prior to Experian, Chandos held marketing and solution development positions at Toshiba Information Systems, SSE Foods and Health Data Sciences. Chandos experience in global product development, partner development and strategic marketing make her a great resource for our International business.
Tony has over 20 years of experience developing customer software solutions across many industries including finance, insurance, publishing, telecom, construction, and utilities.
He specializes in systems with high throughput, computationally intensive, and/or Big Data requirements. Prior to joining Clinverse, Tony provided outsourced CTO services for early-stage start-ups; was the VP of Enterprise Architecture at Merkle, a database analytics company; and for eleven years ran his own consulting firm which delivered architectural and project management services.
Tony received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and Masters of Business Administration from Duke Universitys Fuqua School of Business.
Steve leads Merkle’s client leadership teams, account managers and consulting practitioners across the full breadth of our industries served. He is focused on driving client value through Merkle services that embed advanced customer insight into customer strategies, marketing and customer operations. He brings to Merkle a strong background building and leading consulting practices at IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting, and AT Kearney.
Steve joined Merkle in January 2011 and has more than 25 years’ experience in direct marketing and CRM/analytics strategy consulting. He spent over 8 years at IBM Global Business Services, where his most senior level held was Global Leader, Business Analytics and Optimization Strategy Services.
Prior to that, he served as Partner for PwC Consulting, AT Kearney and Chadwicks of Boston. He has been published extensively on the topics of CRM and analytics.
Jim Warner currently is the principal of Third Floor Enterprises, an advisory firm specializing in digital marketing and media.
Warner joined Avenue A in 2000 and built its East Coast operation into one of the pre-eminent digital agencies. He became Executive Vice President of the company when it acquired Razorfish in 2004. He also served on the executive committee of aQuantive, the parent company, which was acquired Microsoft in 2007.
Before joining Avenue A, Warner held senior positions at Primedia, CBS and HBO.
He led Primedias magazine division overseeing more than 250 consumer and business magazines, web sites and trade show properties.
He was President of the CBS Television Network from 1995-1998 where he managed the advertising sales, affiliate relations, distribution, research, marketing and promotion, and standards and practices functions.
Robert N. Frerichs
A veteran in management consulting and technology, Bob recently retired after 35 years with Accenture. He also retired as the chairman of the Avanade board and is currently the executive chairman of Aricent Group.
His executive-level posts at Accenture included group chief executive, where he maintained overall responsibility for the companys North American operations; chief risk officer, responsible for managing Accentures overall business risk; and chief operating officer of the companys Communication & High Tech operating group. Other positions within that group included global managing partner of the Electronics & High Tech operating group and managing partner of the US Aerospace & Defense operating unit. He also served as managing partner of the Asia Pacific operating units for the Products and Resources operating groups.
Bob was instrumental in the creation of Avanade, a technology company formed by Accenture with Microsoft.
David Yuan joined Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV) in 2005, and is a General Partner focusing on software, internet, and information services.
David currently serves on the boards of ExactTarget, Merkle, and Sitecore , and his other active investments include Facebook, OSIsoft, and Splunk (NASDAQ: SPLK).
His prior investments include Global360 (acquired by OTEX), RenRen (RENN), Seismic Micro Technology (acquired by IHS), and Tinyprints (acquired by SFLY). David has been recognized among the top 100 technology deal makers on the Forbes Midas list.
Prior to joining TCV, David was an investment professional with JPMorgan Partners, a global private equity firm.
Prior to JPMorgan Partners, David was an early employee and director of business development at 1stUp (acquired by CMGI), and a management consultant in the San Francisco office of Bain & Company.
David received an AB in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Rebecca Flavin is CEO at EffectiveUI, where she is responsible the companys overall vision, user experience innovation, core values and strategic direction for growth and financial health. She oversees developing high-performance teams that can help drive top line revenue and high profitability, while achieving client and employee satisfaction. In addition to building and strengthening brand awareness and position in the marketplace, she is responsible for communicating the importance of exceptional user experiences in driving business value.
Prior to joining EffectiveUI in 2006, Rebecca held several key management roles with well-known interactive agencies that included serving as president of eCRM Concepts, vice president of client services for Return Path, director of channel relations at Merkle and director of client services for MessageMedia/DoubleClick.
As co-president, Patrick leads Merkles business together with Tim Berry. Patrick joined Merkle in 1997 as an account executive. Two successful years later, he was promoted to vice president of sales and marketing, where he and Tim worked hand-in-hand to oversee the delivery of data-driven marketing solutions to Merkles clients. Over the years, he has served the company in a wide range of vital roles. Patrick is an avid student of business management, always searching for new tools and approaches that can help the company continue to grow.
Along with Tim, Patrick led the development and enterprise-wide socialization of Merkle’s unique approach to recruiting, hiring, and retaining the best people in the industry. He also drove the definition of Merkle’s innovative Reference-ability 2.0, a program that ensures client satisfaction and he has been a leader in identifying key meeting rhythms that has allowed the company to operate in an optimal mode.
Jim is Merkle’s first ever Chief People Officer and joined the company in 2010. Undaunted by joining a company that proudly had no human resources function, Jim’s focus is on making Merkle a “talent factory” and leveraging the company’s unique corporate culture to support its expansion and breakout as a leading CRM agency.
Under Jim’s leadership, Merkle hires over 300 top marketing professionals annually. He heads the company’s learning initiatives under the umbrella of Merkle University, where he also serves as Dean of the School of People & Culture. Jim initiated Merkle’s unique coaching-based approach to performance management and oversees the company’s total rewards program.
Jim’s career in human resources spans three decades working as a corporate officer and senior executive in Fortune 500 corporations, mid-sized and emerging companies. His experience includes start-ups, mergers & acquisitions, turnarounds, IPO and fast growth companies.
