CARMEN HIGH IS TRAVELING TO THE EDINBURGH FRINGE 2016. This is a production of 30 gifted teens that repurposes Bizet’s original opera to speak to the American high school experience. The production includes entirely new lyrics as well as original pop and hip hop songs written by immensely gifted, young up-and-comers.
CARMEN HIGH is a powerful story about a popular, mean girl who jokingly dates a high school outcast. It’s a story about fitting in and not fitting in, being popular and being bullied, suicide, peer pressure, pop culture, friendship, isolation, and rape. In Carmen High we experience a universe of stories about the American High School experience in a mash-up of hip hop, original pop songs, and music from Bizet’s opera by teenagers navigating the emotional minefield of high school. It’s Glee with an authentic edge.
