MUV – Clean, safe filtered water adapted to your lifestyle

by Daniel Beck

MUV Adaptable Water Filter gives you clean, safe drinking water wherever your adventures lead.

About this project

MUV is an adaptable water filter that gives you protection from contaminants in municipal water as well as all the way up to virus and bacteria protection in some of the most inhospitable places in the world. Using modular technology that works with a water bottle, hydration reservoir, as a straw, or as a gravity filter you get clean water anytime, anywhere.

Most water filters remove only one kind of particulate. MUV not only removes 99.999% of viruses and bacteria, but also allows you to change the filter modules for your specific water needs. If you are getting water from your tap at home in North America, you don’t need to be concerned about viruses being in your water. What you may find in your tap water is chlorine and metals. In this case you don’t need to use the MUV 3 module that removes viruses, or the MUV 2 that removes bacteria, but you would want to use the MUV 1 module that removes chemicals and metals.

MUV Benefits

MUV Adapts to Your Lifestyle

MUV can be customized to anyone’s needs, whether you are an avid hiker, traveling the world, or simply want clean water on the go. MUV can be adapted to meet your clean water needs.

Filtration Specifics

MUV is made of three different filtration mediums. This allows you to choose the filter medium best suited for the severity of the water you will be filtering.

Activated Carbon – MUV 1 Module

Activated Carbon is a term for a manufactured carbon, either coal-based or coconut shell-based. The process is varied for each medium, but essentially the carbon is exposed to oxygen to create tiny pores in the carbon at a molecular level. It is these pores that absorb contaminants by chemical attraction.

Activated Carbon can remove:

  • Chemicals
  • Heavy metals
  • Discoloration of water
  • Negative taste
  • Filters up to 150 gallons

Hollow Fiber – MUV 2 Module

Hollow Fiber membrane are tiny hollow tubes that look like straws. These fibers have a porous membrane that allows clean water into the fiber and prohibits contaminants from passing through the membrane. Hollow Fiber membrane filters water by size exclusion. Size exclusion works by having a pore size smaller than the size of the contaminants. Clean water is allowed to go through the membrane while the large contaminants cannot fit through the pores.

Hollow Fiber can remove:

  • Bacteria (E. Coli, Cholera, Typhoid, etc)
  • Protozoa (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, etc)
  • Filters up to 100,000 gallons

Nanalum – MUV 3 Module

Nanalum works through absorption. Nanalum is manufactured with non-woven highly engineered water filter paper which is also impregnated with Granular Activated Carbon (GAC). The Nanalum module has a strong positive electrostatic charge when wet. Like a strong magnet, the positive electrostatic charge of the Nanalum attracts and traps organic contaminants.

Nanalum can remove:

  • Viruses (Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E, Poliovirus, Meningitis, etc)
  • Bacteria (E. Coli, Cholera, Typhoid, etc)
  •  Protozoa (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, etc)
  • Heavy Metals
  • Chemicals
  • Negative taste
  • Filters up to 90 gallons

How to Use MUV

MUV can be adapted to virtually any lifestyle or activity. Here are some of the ways that you can use MUV.

  • In a water bottle
  • In-line with a hydration bladder
  • Use as a straw and drink directly from the water source
  • As a gravity system
  • With a pump
  • Threaded onto a standard 28mm bottle top

There are dozens of different ways that you can customize and adapt MUV to your needs. You no longer need to buy a bunch of different filters for one specific use. MUV will adapt for you.

History and About Us

MUV has been years in the making. Last year we came out with a product that wasn’t quite ready and, frankly, it was a little confusing. This was called the Oasis Filter and we just missed our funding on Kickstarter. We learned so much from that failed attempt. We got a lot of really good feedback and a lot of support from our backers who wanted us to keep the project going. We went back to the drawing board and hired a design team.

We created many different designs and concepts and with the help of our product development team, focus groups and more feedback from our customers, we developed what has now become MUV.

We spent a lot of time building prototypes and 3D models. This helped us refine the size and feel of the filter components.

We are very excited about the final product and how well the different modules work together. We have had a lot of requests for additional colors. Perhaps as a stretch goal…hint, hint.

Risks and challenges

We have completed all the sourcing of materials, and are 90% done with the final design. Our molds and tooling have already been designed and are awaiting production.

The big hurdle is finalizing testing and certification. However, since our sourcing partners complete internal testing procedures we are confident in a fluid certification process. We have certified other filter products but due to the complexity of certification for a modular water filter, we will have to undergo much more complex testing for the MUV Adaptable Water Filter.
