How Does it Work?

Instead of a removable battery pack or case, Fat Battery is a physical upgrade to your iPhone. We’ve designed it to be very similar to a iPhone screen repair: you pop open the phone, separate the screen and the back, and insert the Fat Battery and Spacer, then reassemble. You can do it yourself or bring it to almost any iPhone repair shop. Our simple instructions and video will

You simply remove your phone’s back, insert our new, larger battery, and add a spacer that matches the look and feel of the phone while giving more room for the battery. Similar to external battery packs, the upgrade will make your phone fatter. Unlike the battery packs, however, Fat Battery is inserted under the skin of the iPhone, which means a slimmer, more aesthetically pleasing result that fits more naturally with the original look of your phone. And again, Fat Battery provides more than double the impact of bulkier charging cases.

To give you an idea of just how much more life your phone will get with Fat Battery, we tried an experiment, doing nothing with the iPhone but simply playing video, with the battery beginning on full charge.
The iPhone’s regular battery played for 13 hours until it died. The Fat Battery Prototype A lasted 36.5 hours!

There are two major elements to this project: the Battery and the Spacer.
The Fat Battery has been designed and we have pricing and manufacturing details from two partners, using mostly off-the-shelf components and creating a custom sized and powered Fat Battery.
The Spacer has been designed to be manufactured by an injection mold process that we’ll get started on immediately after funding. We’ll be placing an order for at least 2,000 units.

Our current battery-testing prototype was completed on an iPhone 6. Note that this test does not include the Spacer. This is a battery test only. Here is a teardown video of the process!




What about the iPhone 7?

We’re planning on making a second edition for the iPhone 7 and the iPhone SE in 2017, but it won’t be unless this campaign succeeds. All Kickstarter backers will have a reserved front-of-line spot to order subsequent Fat Battery products for the 7 and SE.

Risks and challenges

Heat Dissapation
All computers, of course, generate heat. Heat in the iPhone comes from both the chips and the battery, Because Fat Battery is larger, it will generate more heat with less surface area to distribute it, so it will be important that the Spacer provides adequate heat transference.

Charging Circuitry
In the iPhone, like most cell phone battery setups, there is a cell, which holds the power, and a PCM circuit. This Protection Circuit Module protects the battery from over-charging and over-discharging, as well as protecting the rest of the phone from the battery. In our prototype, we are able to use the iPhone’s existing PCM, but we will be continuing to investigate this.
