RICHMOND, VIRGINIA – Celebrating International Workers’ Day, on May 1st, the CarMax Sales Consultant Collective (“KMX Collective”), exercising their rights as employees: (i) under the National Labor Relations Act to “act together to try to improve their pay and working conditions” and (ii) under the National Labor Relations Board decision in Purple Communications, emailed 10,000 CarMax Sales Consultants in 158 different CarMax Stores using the CarMax internal corporate e-mail system.
The KMX Collective e-mail noted that: “In 1996, the commission for selling a car at CarMax was $150. Twenty years later that commission has only risen $10 to $160/car – a meager 6% increase over 20 years. In comparison, according to the latest US government CPI data, over the same twenty year period the rate of inflation has risen 56%.” The net result is that CarMax is paying its Sales Consultants 48% less than it did 20 years ago. In comparison, the C-Suite Executives at CarMax have seen their salaries increase over 200% in the last 10 years. The e-mail went on to invite CarMax Sales Consultants to take an anonymous “Voice of the Sales Consultant” survey and join the KMX Collective. The KMX Collective will deliver those results to the Annual CarMax Shareholders Meeting on June 28, 2016.
