IoT HAT for Raspberry Pi: A must-have for Pi Zero

by RedBear

A Wi-Fi 802.11n + Bluetooth 4.1 (Dual Mode) add-on board for any Raspberry Pi model with the 40 pins GPIO connector

About this project

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are essential!

They are the most frequently used wireless technologies; we use them to access the internet, connect cordless keyboards and many more. However, Pi Zero and previous Raspberry Pi models do not have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built-in.

What is IoT HAT?

IoT (Internet-of-Things)
HAT (Hardware Attached on Top)

It is an add-on board that provides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for the Raspberry Pi.

You can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth USB dongles, however …….

IoT HAT is more affordable

You get both functions for the price of one dongle. And if you are using Pi Zero, you may also need to purchase:

  • USB OTG cable ($3-$5) – connect a normal USB device to the Pi Zero’s micro USB port.
  • USB hub with power adapter ($15-$30) – if you need to connect more than one USB device, it is advisable to use a powered hub for your Wi-Fi and/or USB Bluetooth dongle(s).

The setup is more orderly

Because you do not need the USB OTG Cable and the USB Hub etc, the setup is faster and looks less cluttered.

If you are running an IoT project, you could also remove the keyboard and mouse.

IoT HAT has the same wireless radio as the Pi 3

We are using the same BCM43438 chip that is on the Pi 3 (read here) which supports both Wi-Fi 802.11n (2.4GHz) + Bluetooth 4.1 (Dual Mode – Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy) running at the same time.

The wireless radio of IoT HAT is as good as that of the Pi 3 and all WiFi/Bluetooth software for Pi 3 are compatible.

You can extend the RF range easily

The IoT HAT has an on-board antenna. However if you want to increase the RF range, you can simply attach a compatible antenna to the external antenna socket and flip a switch. No hacking or soldering is required

Pi Zero + IoT HAT is the best IoT combo

Not only is the combination the cheapest of all the options, it has also has the lowest power consumption!

Our partners

You can connect to your Pi over the Internet easily with Weaved‘s IoT Kit for the Raspberry Pi. We are working closely with their engineers to ensure our HAT supports all their services.

Our friends at 8Bitdo have made a special edition of their popular ZERO GamePad for this campaign.

The recalbox allows you to replay a variety of video game consoles and platforms, in your living room, with ease! The recalboxOS is free and open source.

Technical details

IoT HAT is designed to fit perfectly on the Pi Zero, measuring 65 x 30 mm.

And it is also compatible with all previous Pi models with the 40-pins connector.

After connecting the IoT HAT, there are 11 GPIO pins left for you to use.

We offer the IoT HAT, the RedBear ZERO GamePad and the Antenna Kit (antenna with interface cable) as rewards.

If you’re interested in getting more of an item, or creating a combination not listed in the rewards section, simply add the extra corresponding costs to your total pledge amount:

IoT HAT – add $9 each
Antenna Kit – add $6 each
RedBear ZERO GamePad – add $10 each

Shipping & delivery

We are keeping this very simple and affordable; we will ship any quantity, anywhere in the world for $5! That’s right, any quantity!

After the campaign has ended, we will send you a survey form to fill in the delivery and contact information. The shipping address can be different from your billing address.

We fulfilled our last Kickstarter campaign on schedule and we aim to repeat this!

We had our first successful Kickstarter campaign, RedBear Duo, back in December 2015. We have fulfilled all backers who filled up their survey.

Thank You

Risks and challenges

RedBear has been working in the DIY space since 2012 and we have released ten IoT boards to date, so we have experienced a good share of risks and challenges in the past.

We have completed development and have working prototypes in our hands so we are ready for pre-production. When manufacturing, there are always concerns around the production and logistic time frame. However, we have the experience to minimize any controllable hiccups and deal with uncontrollable circumstances. We have over twenty resellers worldwide including Arduino, MakerShed and SparkFun and will use our expertise to deliver the IoT HAT as soon as we can.
