My students need math word wall vocabulary cards, individual money kits, and fractions manipulatives to help solve word problems that seem abstract.
I have students who are on all different levels and learn best by manipulating objects to solve math word problems. Being that my school is a Title l school, most of my students have many personal struggles that they deal with outside of school. Motivation is strongly needed in my school and class.
While I try and keep most of my activities as creative as I can get them, it’s important to have materials to help students concentrate and stay motivated to tackle rigorous math work.
A handful of my students come to school with incomplete homework because they lack outside help or guidance needed to help them study their work. Many of their parents work long hours or are exhausted from hard labor jobs. In some situations. the only academic engagement they get is what is offered at school.
I use manipulatives during my intervention groups all the time. I tell the students to read math problems slowly and one sentence at a time, as we use the tangible objects to act out and visualize the problems. Students that seem to struggle with understanding work taught for the day would be able to check out the math word wall vocabulary cards, individual money kits, and fractions manipulatives that are related to the content to help them problem solve at home. The kits that I am requesting could also be used during whole group lessons to show how using objects can be linked to drawing them on paper for times that they’ll be limited to using outside resources.
Concrete to abstract math thinking is very difficult for my children.
These items would supply me with the materials that I need so that students in my class will have a strong foundation in mathematics. My students would surely master math concepts by having opportunities to build a great background at any time.
