We opened Phase 1 of the playground on January 23, 2016 and the South Park Advisory Council continues to seek donations to complete Phase 2 of the first universally accessible and natural playground in the South Bay cities. This inspiring playground is located in Hermosa Beach and is designed to foster friendships and understanding among people of all abilities and ensure children have a safe, sensory-rich, natural and inclusive place to play.
Since 2007, our Advisory Council along with the City of Hermosa Beach, community members and local schoolchildren have been working together to design a universally accessible playground celebrating the aesthetics of nature (using rocks, logs, etc.).
From the start of this endeavor, we understood what a massive undertaking a project like this is – from years spent working with the City to re-zone the land, waiting for grants to come through, 40+ public meetings to gather design input and demolition of an abandoned concrete skate rink.
Given the large size of this project, the park is planned to be built in phases. With your help, we can accelerate the completion of this park that children and our community have been waiting for almost a decade!
Thanks to the City and various grants, construction on Phase 1 began last year and we had the grand opening of the foundation for the park on January 23. Phase 1 consisted of design, demolition, re-grading, construction of the various play areas, landscaping, irrigation, accessible surfacing, equipment installation, hillside slide, accessible lookout point, tot lot, swings and several pieces of accessible play equipment.
Your donations will help us start and complete Phase 2 early, including:
Your donation benefits Hermosa Beach’s Universally Accessible & Natural Playground and brings enjoyment for all surrounding communities. You will help go beyond standard ADA requirements and allow the children of all abilities in our community play and interact together.
