In early 2012, Kelly Colburn and Kaela Garvin, longtime friends and collaborators, began writing a new kind of comedy. Frustrated by the lack of adequate Asian American representation in entertainment – and frustrated by the difficulties of working in an industry which portrays biracial women as hot sidekicks at best – they created 2 Girls | 1 Asian about their experiences as struggling New York artists. After filming throughout 2013, Kelly and Kaela launched their series online in 2014. You can view the first full season on YouTube, complete with Kelly and Kaela’s parents’ star-making turns as – well, themselves (we did it first, Aziz!) Jenn of popular Asian American blog Reappropriate wrote the series was “nothing if not courageous;” Luann Algoso of Persephone Magazine lauded its “goofy, girl power humor;” and Kaela and Kelly’s mothers said, “When do we get discovered?” We’re excited to share our three new midseason episodes with you on December 17, 2015 and to continue our plans for a full Season 2 to be shot later in 2016.
