My name is Ewen Spencer and I’m a photographer. I’ve been making pictures around subcultures for the past fifteen years.
Come, Bring, Punish is my latest project, documenting the European Vogue scene, also known as Ballroom, and life around it. Vogue and Ballroom is a relatively new incarnation of the predominantly black and gay New York dance subculture from the late 1980s. It is a truly unique moment in global youth subculture because it embraces diversity with style.
For the past eighteen months I’ve been photographing this culture, and I’m excited to bring it to you.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Vogue was forever crystallised into the collective pop consciousness through Madonna’s hit single from 1990. Today it attracts people from all walks of life, men and women alike. The movement celebrates cultural and lifestyle diversity as Europe expands and changes.
WHAT WILL YOUR CONTRIBUTION SUPPORT?
I’m interested in the fact that it is a subculture in development and I’m inviting you to get involved with the movement in it’s earliest stages. Your involvement in the project will contribute to further establishing and celebrating the current incarnation of European Vogue as a historically relevant subculture.
