Athletics – Deaf World Championships

Hi,

My name is Colette and I am an International Deaf Athlete. Here you will read a bit about me and why I really need your help. I have been Deaf from birth and with the support from my family & friends I am comfortable with my disability although this took many years to gain confidence but I am also very proud with what I have achieved……so far :) This season I have the one of the most competitions of my whole career, the World Championships in Bulgaria! My target is a Gold medal but I will of course be happy coming away with a medal as the standard is very high. I am the Great Britain Deaf Record Holder and hope to also break it again this season.

The Great Britain Deaf Team aren’t fortunate enough to receive funding from the National Governing Body but we dont let this stop us. Throughout my life i have been fortunate enough that my parents help support me in the sport that I love but looking forward to next year for The World Championships and the fact we have to fund ourselves to represent our Country, I just wont be able to afford going to these championships. My dream has been to represent and always work hard for my Country but financing this will stop me from achieving this. My greatest achievement was my first GB Able-Bodied call up when I was 22 in which the newspaper headline stated

‘GB CALL FOR COURAGEOUS COLETTE – FIVE YEARS AFTER CHEATING DEATH.

CARLISLE athlete Colette Doran, who almost died in a car accident five years ago, has been called up to the Great Britain under-23 squad.

The reason this was so special for me was that I was in a serious car accident where I was knocked down, spending days in intensive care. This is the time you realise how family are so important and I cant thank them enough for their love and guidance they gave me through this very difficult time. They helped me not to forget my goal in which I worked tirelessly to get back to the sport I love and realise my dream….I did just that! I have now just got caught with this hurdle in which I Hope to leap with your support.

Thank you so much for taking time out and reading this.

With your help, I am needing to raise £3,200 to be able to represent Great Britain at The Deaf World Championships
