Chihuahua, Chihuahua, October, 16, 2015 – New Startup Kawí has raised more than $4,300 in 4 days through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to finish the development of their innovative original design. The company set out to raise $25,000 in order to open a shop.
As a product designer, Mauricio Uranga had an idea that would have a positive impact on the world. That idea has now evolved into a 5 people startup. “We want to create products from natural materials that not only offer high quality style and value to a consumer but that also preserve the world around us,” said one of the founders.
Their first product is a backpack that is made with organic, compostable, vegan materials. It is ergonomically designed, with an adjustable handmade strap and a coconut shell buckle. The inspiration behind this backpack is the Tarahumara culture, even the name Kawí means is taken from their language and it means “earth.” The strap, which is made by artists of this native Mexican culture, has meaningful symbolism drawn from their religion.
The backpack includes a variety of sized compartments for your books or tablet and smaller pockets to carry your important smaller items like: coins, pens, phone and more. They replaced plastics and metal materials, like zippers, from conventional backpacks with accessories made out of coconut shell such as buttons, buckles, and hoops used for hanging your glasses or keys.
It is made entirely with GOTS organic certified cotton fabric and the coconut shell accessories. This makes the backpack very durable but also biodegradable (3 months while buried). They have a video showing the biodegradation process compared to a standard backpack.
They are raising funds because they currently have two freelance people giving the professional handmade looks to the backpacks. Rosa, a Tarahumara artist, makes the straps and Luz Elena sews the backpacks together. The current process for making a single backpack takes one week, so they want to open an official shop, hire full-time well-paid employees and increase their productivity.
Keep an eye on them as they go through their journey and check out their beautifully crafted, original and inspiring crowdfunding video.
