The Springbok Nude Girls
The name of the band is enough to intrigue you, not knowing whether to expect nude girls or a rock band! A story about SA’s most incredible rock band set against the socio-cultural background of 1994 and the fall of apartheid. 5 diverse personalities mixing different music styles ranging from punk rock, ska, acid jazz and heavy metal
“INXS kindly agree to close for the Springbok Nude Girls.” (The Big Picture, May 1997).
For 3 years we, a group of filmmakers and of course huge fans of the band, have been collecting archival footage to make this documentary. It’s a passion project that so many people of my age can relate to. 5 young Afrikaans guys forming a rock band in 1994 singing in English ready to embrace the international market that suddenly opened up to us post apartheid. I went back packing through Europe and the Middle East in 1993, expecting to come back to a boring, conservative student life. Lucky for me I ended up in the same town as SNG the student town of Stellenbosch!
