BRINGING THE BEACH BACK TO APOLLO BEACH!
We need your help!
How would you like to live in a town with “beach” in its name and yet not have a beach? In the small town of Apollo Beach, just outside Tampa, we had a beach, but it was lost to erosion several years ago. We are now a beach town with no beach, but you can help us change that with your donation.
The Apollo Beach Waterway Improvement Group (ABWIG), a community-based volunteer organization, has joined forces with the HIllsborough County Parks& Recreation Department and several businesses in the area to form a “public, private, and commercial partnership.” Our goals were as follows:
- to recreate the beach in such a way that the effect of future erosion would be minimized
- restore the natural shoreline
- dredge the three navigational channels into and out of the community to re-establish safe transit (and enjoyment of the waterways), and
- develop a new marine habitat to encourage better fishing at the park
In order to reach these goals, the budget of $1,500.000 was established. Through a combination of fundraising events, assistance from Hillsborough County, business donations, and community support, all but $50,000 has been raised.
Now that the County’s work is completed, ABWIG still needs to raise the last portion. The dredging and beach renourishment are yet to be completed, and we have turned to this Fundly site to help us make this final goal. We have nearly tapped out our local resources, and are hopeful that the scope of this campaign will put us over the top to reach our goal.
We are nearly there, but we can’t reopen the new park completely until the beach is completed.
You can see the work that has been completed in the pictures and video that are attached. All that remains is the dredging portion and the re-creation of the beach with the sand we’ll remove from the channels.
Thank you for supporting our project to bring the beach back to Apollo Beach!
