I have been in the produce business since I was 7 years old, and have worked for my family’s produce company my whole life. I have worked in the retail, wholesale, and food production areas of the company. I left the family business in April 2014 to begin my own produce business that focuses on the promotion and production of products created from Kentucky-grown fruits and vegetables. My business concept purchases Kentucky-grown produce from local farmers, and utilizes up to 100% of their product to create retail, wholesale, and food manufacturing products. It allows an outlet for the high and lower quality produce products.
My company utilizes two separate facilities; one in Elizabethtown, KY which washes, grades, and sorts locally grown fruits and vegetables, and another facility in Bardstown, KY that packages products for the retail grocery industry and processes lesser quality items to create value-added products to be used in the food service and food manufacturing markets. We have installed a freezing line to freeze processed and whole locally grown products to expand the availability in which Kentucky-grown products are available for purchase from local businesses.
This loan will allow me to commit to the purchase of more locally produced green beans in future years, which will give Kentucky farmers a product that they can grow to earn a living to support their families and their farms. With the ability to freeze local products, we can purchase large quantities of beans from Kentucky farmers during the growing season, which will allow them to earn enough income to support them through the winter months.
