Personal Story

From an early age I’ve been an artist and have been one ever since. I grew up in Central Islip, NY, with my five siblings and both parents of Caribbean descent.
I was always encouraged by my family and art teachers to nurture my creative abilities. I stayed on the artist path, attending the Fashion Institute of Technology, graduating with a BFA in illustration, 1998.
It was during my junior year at F.I.T. an interest in creating jewelry sparked. My Mother’s curated collection of vintage rings and brooches inspired me to start creating my own original jewelry designs, so I taught myself the craft.
My passion to create jewelry comes from a desire to connect with people whom want to own their power.
My designs reflect that power in the person wearing it.

Business Description

In 1999 my handmade jewelry artistry transformed into a business, selling custom and limited edition; leather earrings, cuff bracelets, pendants and rings made of gold, sterling silver, brass and copper.
Some of my early jewelry commisions were created for the stage; cuff bracelets, pendants and rings, worn by recording artist such as Andre 3000, Common, Raphael Saadiq and my biggest client to date Erykah Badu.
I’ve sold my work in the streets of Soho, street festivals, private trunk shows, flea markets and small boutiques throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Since 2011 I have designed 30 custom wedding and engagement rings made of the highest quality precious metals and gemstones. Having the opportunity to create such a symbol of supreme commitment between two people has brought me the greatest fulfillment as a jewelry designer to date. All of my fine jewelry creations have been by referral. I’m ready to reach a broader audience by launching a fine jewelry collection available for sale via a new web site, www.lorrainewest.com.
