TEAMUCAN2 – SAILING FOR GOLD 2016
Hello & welcome to TEAMUCAN2! Please click above to watch our video and hear our story. We are Canada’s two-person paralympic sailing team going for GOLD at Rio in the Skud-18 class. We are also a married couple! We met sailing in Miami, racing against each other when Jackie was on the British sailing team. We fell in love (not just with sailing…) and Jackie moved to Canada while John went to Beijing and won a bronze medal for Canada. For the Rio campaign we decided take the risk, team up and go for gold. With a series of recent podium places in our pocket and a current world ranking of 3rd, we have our eyes firmly on the ultimate prize.
We are raising money to ship ourselves and our boat to Melbourne, Australia for the World Championships in November 2015. The costs for this trip are major – shipping of our boat, flights for us and our coach, accommodation for over a month, rent of a coachboat – however the benefits are huge: great conditions at a time when it is difficult to sail in Canada, top competition with a big fleet, training with the World Champion Australian team and an extra event (Sail Melbourne) after the Worlds. We can’t miss this in our final run up to the Paralympics!
While we do receive some funding, it does not cover the overall costs to train and compete at the highest level. Traditionally we have organized local fundraisers to try and offset these additional travel and equipment costs. Challenging for gold also requires top level coaching; in addition to our own personal costs to train and compete, we also have to pay for the cost of coaching and coach boat support.
Please join our team, and be a part of our push to the podium. With your help, our dream to be Canada’s golden couple in Rio can come true.
