No One Cares About Your Cat: Tantrum is raising $10,000 to enable our emerging artists to perform their new show

No One Cares About Your Cat

The story of the project

>> Tantrum is raising $10,000 to enable our emerging artists to perform their new show,No One Cares About Your Cat, in Newcastle and Sydney in September this year. <<

Back in 2014, Newcastle’s leading youth theatre company  Tantrum Youth Arts brought emerging artists Jocelyne Lamarche, James Chapman, Zoe Anderson, Sam de Lyall and Jemima Webber together with contemporary performance collective Paper Cut and leading Australian theatre-maker David Williams to ask difficult questions about our digital social lives. This team has been working for over a year and a half to create a new work from scratch based on the results – and it’s truly fantastic!

Here at Tantrum, we specialise in giving emerging artists a voice. Since 2012 we’ve done this without annual program funding from the Australia Council for the Arts, instead relying heavily on project grants. Unfortunately, in the  current funding climate, project funding for this show has been impossible to secure, so we’re looking to supporters of new theatre to fill the gap.

Building new work is not cheap and getting it to the stage requires extra support.  No One Cares About Your Cat combines original visual and physical performance with verbatim text to create an evocative and captivating contemporary theatre experience. Developed in partnership with the University of Newcastle, it features cutting edge audio and video projections created by UON student artists including Tim Buchanan(projections) and Jess Blackburn (composition).

No One Cares About Your Cat is an exciting new production that examines our relationships with social media and with each other in a dynamic, inventive and entertaining way – and you have the opportunity to bring it to life. We are banking on the support of our community, our fellow artists, friends, family and even strangers from afar to give these emerging artists the opportunity of showing their own, original work to audiences in Newcastle and Sydney.

How the funds will be used

The biggest expense for the campaign is getting the cast and crew to Sydney, where they will perform the show at Australian Theatre For Young People.  We also have to cover some of the production and marketing costs that come with developing and staging an original work of this type. These costs apply to and cover both our Newcastle and Sydney shows.
