Personal Story
I am a New York City based makeup artist and esthetician. My passion for makeup and skincare developed in my teens when the hunt for beautiful skin became my hobby. I bought every product teen magazine that promised their methods would fix my skin. During my struggles with breakouts, I waited tables to afford the latest and greatest products. The constant search to correct and conceal my skin led me to enroll in an advanced skincare course; it was a penny well spent.
It was also during this time that I decided to become a makeup artist. Despite my lack of experience, I opened the phone book and called every photographer in town until one gave me a chance. I will never forget the first person that sat in my makeup chair. She came in with a full face of thick foundation to conceal her acne. As I worked to remove her makeup she began to cry. In that moment, like a mirror, I saw myself in her. This experience helped shape my life long passion for helping others see their own beauty.
A few years later, I became an educator for luxury cosmetic brands. As an educator, I was able to work with the press and teach makeup and skincare classes to numerous makeup artists in nearly 30 countries. I broke into film and television by handing out my card to anyone who would accept it and working on student films in my spare time. My work has been displayed on celebrity red carpet events and numerous television programs including ABC News, Good Morning America, and Dancing with the Stars and I’ve had the pleasure of working with many celebrities.
Business Description
Parallel to my life’s purpose of creating beauty, is my passion for business. I decided that I wanted to work for myself years ago but it was not until this year that I decided not to wait any longer. Currently hindering my growth is a lack of funds to purchase specific beauty equipment. This equipment will give me a competitive edge that will allow me to open business doors.
I have a 5-year plan to roll out a full range of products, manufacturing strategy and marketing plan. Phase 1 is about building a solid clientele. Phase 2 will revolve around the launch of my brand, expanding the business into a brick and mortar location, and hiring a small team. Phase 3 will focus on domestic expansion and Phase 4 is geared towards my brand’s global rollout and expansion.
When I told my father that I wanted to be a makeup artist, his response was, “If you are going to do it, you better go all the way!” For me, having the opportunity to start my own business is the beginning of “going all the way” and that makes me proud.
What is the purpose of this loan?
I will be using the Kiva Zip Loan to purchase the necessary equipment I need to run my business. The machine needed is a private label patented face sculptor that offers instant results. This machine will cost $9,995 before taxes. Having this machine will allow me to open business doors and since I will be able to sell a series or packages of services having this machine will increase my business by 100%.
This loan will allow me to start my own business and provide myself and my family a higher quality life.
