Archived: Ayanna – HEAL: Pilates – We believe that mind-body connection, stability, and strengthening are all vital in achieving a pain-free, physically fit, and balanced body

Personal Story

Born in San Francisco, my mother and I relocated to Ohio when I was three years old. I started training as a competitive gymnast at six. At twelve years old, we moved to to Kent, Ohio where there was a better gymnastics facility. By fifteen, I was state champion. However, I had also taken a liking to California.

My father and brother lived in the East Bay Area and my mother and I decided we were ready to move back. We packed up and drove across country to California. I finished high school in San Francisco, now performing in theater and dance.

I went to UCLA and earned a B.A. in Theater, concentrating in Acting and Musical Theatre. I trained in modern dance, but had to stop after problems with my knee. At twenty-three, I had knee surgery and used Pilates to rehabilitate. I found Pilates to be the most effective form of healing for me. I decided that after my recovery, I wanted to continue my Pilates practice as an instructor.

Now, after eight years of teaching, I’m ready to share my knowledge of Pilates and the kinesthetic insight I’ve gained from years of training as a gymnast and dancer by opening my own studio: “HEAL: Pilates”.

Business Description

At HEAL: Pilates, it’s not all about looking good; it’s about feeling good. Health is our priority. We believe that mind-body connection, stability, and strengthening are all vital in achieving a pain-free, physically fit, and balanced body.

HEAL: Pilates offers reformer classes for small groups of up to four people and specialized private instruction where quality of movement is valued over quantity of repetitions. Our services are therapeutic, accessible, and tailored to the needs of the individual client. We believe that the key to our success is focusing on personal improvement, client trust, appreciation, and creating a community that is accepting and empowering.

HEAL: Pilates’ customers are people who have had a recent injury, a doctor’s recommendation to try Pilates to help their back pain, or a negative experience due to instructors’ failure to provide detailed, attentive instruction (such poor instruction can cause injury). These people want individualized attention from knowledgeable, careful instructors in a therapeutic, non-competitive environment.

HEAL: Pilates’ customers are primarily adult women. They’re professionals, homemakers, or retired, most of whom have a college education.

HEAL: Pilates has leased a commercial space on Solano Avenue in Albany. HEAL: Pilates would use the Kiva Zip funds towards purchasing Pilates equipment.

What is the purpose of this loan?

With the $10,000 from Kiva Zip, HEAL: Pilates can purchase three used reformer machines valued at $3300 each. With three reformer machines, HEAL can teach classes and see more clients per hour. The result is an increase in revenue and customer base.

With the equipment to start my studio, I will have ownership over my craft, and will no longer have to rent studio time in order to teach my clients. The expansion of my business will help me become more financially stable. My partner and I will be able to save more money and prepare to start a family.
