Youth Rise Texas Organizing Institute
What We Do
Youth Rise Texas uses civic engagement, community organizing, and creative cultural production to cultivate the next generation of progressive leaders for justice, turning trauma into healing and empowerment.
Youth Rise will use participatory democratic action to engage elected officials, share their stories, and ensure that their voices are heard during the political process.
Youth Rise focuses on cultivating lifelong leaders through teaching teens about current and historical struggles for justice. They’ll work alongside other locally based organizations, learning concrete ways we can build community and transformation right now.
Teens will use oral history research to collect stories from each other and their families about the impacts of parental/caregiver incarceration and deportation. These stories will form the basis for a monologue series, which we’ll tour throughout Austin as a discussion starter to create a community dialogue about the injustice of family separation.
Healing & Empowerment
Social change work is hard, especially when we come to the table with our own pain that connects us to this work. Youth Rise weaves self-care strategies throughout our work, using poetry, writing, movement and mindfulness, and just plain fun to take time out for self-care and reinvigorate our minds, bodies, and spirits!
Where Your Money Will Go
Our eight-week Youth Organizing Institute will start in June 2015. Five teens will work together with Youth Rise facilitators for 20 hours per week to create a community of trust and transformation. Teen participants will be compensated for their time, meaning that the bulk of our programming costs go directly to Youth Rise members to enable their full participation over the summer. See our suggested gift amounts at the side to get a fuller picture of the needs we have and how you can directly contribute to make Youth Rise a reality.
Other Ways You Can Help
We know that some people just can’t contribute monetarily, but we need so much more than that to make our work possible! Here’s some other ways you can support us.
- Share this campaign with others in your network
- Host a small gathering or party in our honor and pass a hat
- We’re still recruiting! We know that immigrant detention and mass incarceration impact so many communities in distinct and overlapping ways. Help us recruit a group of teens that contributes to a deeper experience this summer. Visit our website at www.youthrisetx.org to find our registration form and flyer for download.
- Donate your time! Do you have some skills to share with us? We need artists, theatre professionals, teachers, graphic designers, media workers, and so much more. If you’re interested, drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org
