Black Daughter invited to The Killers’ studio to make 1st EP: Join our journey as we head to The Killers’ personal studio! SHORT-RUN EP, TIX, MULTITRACK, MIXTAPE, COVERS, KILLERS’ STUDIO TOUR.

Black Daughter invited to The Killers’ studio to make 1st EP

“Cohen’s spry, reedy voice navigates all sorts of minor key left turns and lilting grace notes that flutter around memories of loved ones packing their bags or coming home from surgeries.” — Boston Globe

“A whole lot of fun to watch and looking like she just stepped out of a Runaways album cover, Johnson brings a great 70’s punk feel.” — Maine Music News

“So why would a studio that has seen The Killers, Elton John and Mötley Crüe, as well as members of Aerosmith and Third Eye Blind, not already be a household name, at least in the 702 area code? Lead engineer Root prefers keeping Battle Born Studios under the radar, with the studio’s actual whereabouts known only to ‘serious musicians who want to take their art to the next level.’ “ — Las Vegas Weekly

BLACK DAUGHTER is a new band with experienced artists, entrepreneurs, and music industry personnel at its core. In early June 2015, we are descending on Las Vegas, NV to record our debut EP at the legendary Battle Born Studios, the personal studio of the famous rock band The Killers.

This is our heartfelt invitation for you to join our journey!

To make the music creation process more open to everyone, we’re doing something very unique — all Kickstarter supporters who contribute at least $15 will get a one-year subscription to access and remix multitrack versions of all tracks from the new EP, as well as all new songs we create in the upcoming year! Read on for more details.

While we are all experienced musicians with decades of indie, folk, and punk under our belts (and albums to show for it), this is the first Kickstarter project we are undertaking together. We have defined some rewards we are excited about, but if YOU have an interesting idea for a creative reward, please let us know and we’ll make it happen!

A couple important points:

  • The funds raised will be used to cover the costs of recording, production, mastering, promotion, and travel. Any leftover cash will be put towards further promotion and/or a new album.
  • We currently don’t have plans to produce physical CDs outside of Kickstarter, so if you’re into CDs, this campaign is likely to be your ONLY chance to get your hands on one!

Below are some rough demos and snippets that should give you a pretty good idea of what we are working on as we’re preparing for our trip to the studio.

As mentioned earlier, we are also making multitrack versions of all new songs available. Here is an example of what a control room for one of our tracks looks like:

This will be made possible through our band’s channel on AudioCommon, a cloud-based collaboration and streaming platform. All Kickstarter backers who contribute at least $15 will receive a one-year subscription to our channel on AudioCommon – which will also get you access to super-secret updates, demo tracks, acoustic versions, and other goodies throughout the upcoming year!

If you have any additional questions about our preparation process you’d like answered here, please let us know!

The noise comes from Boston. We met on a cold New England night and set out to change the way music is created and distributed together.

The name Black Daughter comes from the concept of a silhouette cutout. These portraits were most popular before the advent of photography and were used as a relatively inexpensive alternative to painted portraits. Though minimal in nature, these black construction paper cutouts convey a surprising amount of information about the person behind the image.

Black Daughter is Philip Cohen, Carissa Johnson, Mykhaylo “Misha” Kostandov, and Chris Dorsey.

Phil, Misha, and Chris previously played together all over New England in the band called Philip Cohen & The Boxers. Phil’s previous album, Leaving, was released in January 2012 and has played on hundreds of college radio stations throughout the US and Canada.

Battle Born Studios (formerly Studio Vegas), a boutique recording studio owned by The Killers, has hosted bands including Mötley Crüe, Elton John, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, members of Aerosmith and Third Eye Blind, as well as several other invited bands.

For any band, the most critical part of making a new album is, obviously, writing the songs. We already have enough new material to fill a complete album, not just an EP! We have rehearsed, arranged, and finalized everything so we will certainly be able to complete full tracking once in Vegas.

As mentioned earlier, we have all been playing for a long time and are very dedicated to this project. If you have concerns or questions, please feel free to get in touch!
