The story of the project
Join the Campaign!
Help us establish a permanent Independent Cinema for Geelong.
After 6 months it is clear that Geelongians (or Pivotonians for that matter) are in overwhelming support for a permanent Independent Cinema. We’ve heeded the call and although we can no longer remain as a Pop-Up Cinema at The Ukrainian Hall, we are utterly dedicated to becoming a permanent fixture on the exciting cultural landscape of Geelong.
We have the dedication. We have the projector. And we’ve got a whole bunch of films lined up for you to enjoy in comfortable new surroundings.
All we need is a little help to get things moving -design, construction and fitout costs don’t come cheap, but with a few bucks here or there you can help put your mark on this endeavour. We’re catering to your needs as community that can proudly call the cinema the home of quality films in Geelong. And we will do our utmost to keep our affordable prices in check, with no hidden mark-ups or big prices, whilst still bringing you the best cinema experience in town!
How the funds will be used
We are currently finalising a venue to call The Pivotonian Cinema home. However, as we’re starting anew, we need your help to fund:
– Construction of Cinema auditoriums
– Professional sound-proofing
– Cinema screens
– Comfy seating
– Heating & Cooling
– Fixtures / Electrics
– Toilets
Then comes a smart-looking Candy Bar for you to purchase the quality, regional Beers & Wines, affordable sweets, home-made Choc Tops, soft drinks & snacks we have on offer!
– Fridges
– Bench-tops
– Sinks
– Flooring & Walls
– Decor
– Fixtures / Electrics
Although we are only asking you to pledge a small fraction of the overall cost, you can rest assured that you will be proudly rewarded with the enduring quality that we will deliver. We hope to keep the build under $150k and every contribution is significant.
Quality Cinema. Every Day.

Challenges
Although we’ve had a great run at The Ukrainian Hall, the most trouble has been with providing better acoustics and a full digital sound experience. We’d also like to bring in more comfortable seating (with a gradient to improve sight-lines), and a more intimate atmosphere.
Of course, our biggest challenge has been in selecting an appropriate venue. And although the Pix Theatre is our No.1 choice, things aren’t looking too good at the moment but regardless of the outcome, we’ll be incorporating at least a piece of the Pix Theatre into the new Pivotonian Cinema.

Project Team
Mark is the Director of The Pivotonian Cinema, Geelong’s own independent cinema. With Jessica Litsas, he launched The Pivotonian as a Pop-Up Cinema in the Ukrainian Hall, on Pakington Street Geelong West in November, 2014. However, the Pop-Up will finish in June 2015.
Following plans (foiled by Village Cinemas) to reopen the Pix Theatre, Mark & Jess have had to find an entirely new venue to build a cinema from scratch. The building costs are significant but with a little help from the Geelong community anything is… ahh… pozible.
