Night Terrors – Augmented Reality Survival Horror

An ultra immersive gaming experience that transforms your environment into a terrifying hellscape.
Novum Analytics
Our aim is to create the scariest game ever made. It’s a highly immersive, photorealistic, binaural, AUGMENTED REALITY survival horror game for mobile devices.  Gameplay takes place at home, after dark, with the lights off and your headphones on.

Think about a system that understands where you are in your environment, and is able to exploit that information in order to create an unbelievable augmented reality experience.

Think about playing a game where the storyline involves you. Consider a future full of movies you star in, experiences that seem real, and scenarios, in our case, that are freakishly frightening.

This is in your house. This is in your apartment. This is in your environment

This is Night Terrors.

  • The game controls what you see, what you hear, and where you go.  Your device’s LED is all the light you get.  The camera and microphone feeds are analyzed and processed in real time.  Photorealistic elements are added to the camera feed.  Audio is spatialized, mixed with the microphone feed, and then routed to the headphones delivering an immersive binaural audio experience.

  • Gameplay is deceptively simple.  You only have to do two things.
  • 1) Save the girl.
  • 2) Survive.
  • Figuring out how you’ll do that is the real challenge.
  • Hint:  It doesn’t involve sitting on your couch.
  •  Nightfall.
    The time has come.
    The signal grows stronger.
    Go. Save her life.

  • In order to be truly scary, we had to make the experience seem real. Night Terrors is built on four major algorithms. These algorithms work together to deliver an unmatched augmented reality experience. While we don’t want to divulge all our secrets, here’s a couple sneak-peeks at how it works, and what makes this terrifying experience all the more realistic.

  • Long and short, we’ve built a system that understands where the walls, ceiling and floors exist, making the ghost placement much more realistic and believable to the player

  • We’re using a variety of features totally new to augmented reality experiences on mobile devices, including point-source modeling, environment filtering and intensity scanning in order to build a clean map only from walls and light. Gyroscope sensor data is used as a starting point, ceilings and floors are established, giving way to a one-of-a-kind experience for players.  Check out the video below for a demonstration.

  • As you can see from above, all these combine to create depth data and compute player position giving elements in the game unparalleled realism. When used together, we’re able to build a map of the players environment – with it, the ‘impossible’ becomes possible.  We can create a breathtakingly scary experience for players – one that will make you forget and question what it is you’re playing, and how the system knows what it does.

  • We’re using practical effects opposed to CGI – In Night Terrors, every augmented element is photographed in order to compost elements and match lighting in the players’ environment. With control over the devices LED, the lighting conditions of both element and environment can be manipulated to create a perfect, extraordinarily frightening match.

  •  We’ve come a long way with the technology, but now need your help in finishing this game. What initially started as an 8 month project has turned into a 24 month project. Instead of ‘settling’ and ‘getting something out’, we recognized the strides that we were making in augmented reality, what Night Terrors could be, and decided to proceed in order to make the experience that we knew was possible. We are incredibly grateful for any funding we might receive and have some great perks to go along with it. Its your chance to be a part in creating a new genre in gaming, and we’re very excited to show you what we’ve made.

  • iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6+ are guaranteed but we really want our game on every platform we can get it on, and that’s part of the reason we’re here.  We have iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices and love them all.  Android development will follow iOS, Windows Phone after that, hardware permitting.
