A central and growing component of the BRYTE program is BRYTE Summer Camp, a six week academic enrichment program for refugee youth in Providence, ages 6-14. Through experiential learning, ESL-focused curriculum, and innovative group enrichment, BRYTE Summer Camp works to reverses typical academic backsliding and summer learning loss and helps close the achievement gap for the refugee students in our program.Brown student counselors along with high school refugee student counselors co-lead small classrooms of 4-8 campers, allowing much room for individual attention and supplementary academic support. BRYTE Summer Camp builds a diverse and supportive community of approximately 50 refugee children who share a common set of experiences (life in refugee camps; trauma from living through violent conflicts; interrupted or non-existent formal schooling).Through field trips, swimming lessons at the YMCA and other enrichment activities including Art, Science and Sports, BRYTE Summer Camp helps refugee children explore and understand their new community of Providence. By participating in BRYTE’s Summer Camp, refugee students develop essential language skills and the self-confidence to succeed in school and in society.
