BANZAI Japanese Game is an innovative decision of the most of tasks teachers and learners face during mastering Japanese.
THE STORY
International cooperation and exchange are important for successful society and for peace in the world. I am concerned that the key to tolerance is the understanding of the culture and mind of other nations. this is possible breaking down the language barrier, because foreign language and culture are interrelated. Learning the language we are become known of the cultural aspects of the nation, its history and heart. I believe that there is a lot we can exchange with other countries and together make a great deal of great things. Cross cultural understanding is the basement of peace and friendship in the world. That is why I devoted all my life to research of the language learning methods.
I was keen on Japanese language, I enjoyed it all – symbols, sounds…everything. And it was decided – I should learn it! First steps were full of struggle! I tried to learn katakana and hiragana. My teacher thought that the best way to learn katakana and hiragana is to write them many times again and again. I wrote them thousands times and spent a great deal of time to master them.
I coupe with all difficulties and even became a teacher of Japanese language. Since first steps in learning the language I was wondering… should it be so difficult? Japanese is fun without any doubts. A lot of people start to learn it but stop when it appears so hard and boring. It is sad! And I started looking for better way of learning! In Kiev there is a cafe where you can have a dinner and play any table board game. Once I was having rest with my friends, we were having lunch and playing different games: bingo, scramble and so on. And suddenly I understood! Here it is! Learning can be easy and fun! I should join the game and the knowledge! And this game was born!
On my first lessons people were concentrated and serious. “Japanese is so difficult” thought they. But when they started to play this game they got so much involved that forgot their fear and in 60 minutes were able to read katakana and hiragana!
During all my way as Japanese teacher I tried this game with children and adults and the results were great! That is why I want to share this game with everybody to prove – LEARNING CAN BE FUN!
I have the pleasure to present the first shortest way to learn Japanese! Banzai Japanese game is an innovative solution to most of problems which are faced by those who learn and teach Japanese. Japanese is easy to speak and read. But still native speakers of Indo-European languages find it difficult to get used to Japanese language system. The problem is that for learning Japanese language Indo-European methods are used. High results can be achieved just by changing the method! Banzai Japanese Games are the result of my 11-year experience of teaching foreign languages and the final solution to the task I was concentrated on these years. It is simple and effective as all genius solutions. The key points are simple: first – the method, second – the game. We learn faster when we are carried away by something exciting and still need the right guide ways.
I believe that with your participation in this project Banzai Japanese Games will be helpful for teachers and students all over the world! I would like to thank you for your participation in this important project. Your presence together with your active contributions, feedback and ideas are greatly appreciated and has gone towards making this project a great success. TEST RESULTS
The conception of the game was developed long ago in 2003. Since that time it was tested at Japanese lessons and different events, at the exhibitions, opened lessons and master-classes. The general quantity of participants is more than 10 thousand of people, 55% – 9-17 years old, 30% – 18-25 years old, 15% – adults in the age of 26-45. This academic year (2014-2015) in new groups (level beginners) students master ed Japanese alphabets in 4,5 hours. They could read and write easily.
At opened lessons (in 2014 7598 people attended them, 64% – 10-17 years, 16% – 18-25 years, 20% – 27-35 years) in 1,5 hours of game play 82% remembered symbols of Japanese alphabets, 69% could read. Over 8 years there were more than 5600 of game sections. All participants with pleasure and excitement took part in the game! Should be mentioned that first version of the game was black and white and not so bright as it is now.
18% of families of our students use this game at home. Or may be even more.
ADVANTAGES OF THE METHOD
1. Game method. While playing games participants can learn a lot of things. There were several researches on the question and they confirmed that playing a game people are more relaxed and at the same time their level of concentration is high. So they gain knowledge “accidentally”.
2. Simple rules and brightness of the game make it interesting and available for people of any age.
3. Additional materials help learn more about not just the language but Japanese culture, traditions and customs.
4. Besides the knowledge the game favors improvement of mind, memory and other skills.
5. Social values and improvement of communication.
6. Method used in the game can be used in other spheres beside linguistics.
SOME SECRETS FOR YOU
SECRET #1. I will tell you one secret! Yes, for the first sight the fact that Japanese language has such a complex system – two alphabets and kanji – is frightening. But! It is just for the first sight. The core concept is the assignment of the alphabets. Katakana, one of Japanese alphabets, is used for foreign, taken mostly from English language words. It is a widespread knowledge. But seldom taken into consideration. The secret is that if you speak English – you half speak Japanese! That is why katakana is so helpful and Japanese easy!
For example, in Japanese language “pidza” means “pizza”. “Koohi” means “coffee”. Yes, sounds a bit strange but not difficult to get used to and to understand!
So after learning how to read katakana it will become easy for you to understand a lot of Japanese words and read road signs, trade names! For English speaking people Japanese is half-known already.
SECRET # 2. May be you have heard about Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Sounds serious, doesn’t it? So what the point is. JLPT has 5 levels and the requirements for the highest one is 2000 kanji! Yes, kanji are more complex than our words, but any way let ask ourselves if it is really difficult to learn 2000 words, symbols? No. And this is the level of an ordinary Japanese person! Any other kanji will be underwritten with hiragana, so it is easy!
SECRET # 3. To master any skill everyday practice is required. Just 15 minutes a day is enough for progress! But everyday!
The Rules Welcome to the extraordinary Academy “Sakura Matsuri”!
You are going to study in an unusual way – by playing games!
The game is played similar to Bingo or Lotto games and the rules are simple.
The quantity of players from 1 to 24.
Starting the game 1. Each player gets one or more game boards.
Each board has 20 squares with symbols depending on the type of the game. Here is a game board for Hiragana game. Also a game board includes 4 horizontal lines and 5 vertical lines.
Each player gets a tip page with symbols of katakana or hiragana where all the symbols with the reading are.
2. The dealer takes one of the cards from the packet. The card is shown. If the game is played without the dealer this mission players can do one by one.
3. The task is: – Find out if there is the same symbol on their game board.
– If it is, the players should name it as quickly as possible. The first who manages to do this gets the card and covers it.
So the game boards are covered with the cards one by one.
Winning the game Players choose how the game can be won. There several ways of winning the game:
– if a player fills in the horizontal line or vertical, or any line.
– If a player covers all the board.
Or for examle:
Absolute winner is the player who covers all the board.
Next winner is the one who fills in the row.
ADDITIONAL GAME OPPORTUNITIES
There can be used a game bank made up with game money – “matsuriks”.
Here are three main types of the game:
1. A short game. The player who covered the row wins and gets the game bank.
2. Game “3×3”. In this game the task is to fill in the row, but the result is different. Each player gets some money and makes a bet. When one of the players fills in one of upper lines, other players double their bets. If a player fills in one of the middle lines, the player gets half of the bank! If a player fills in one of the bottom lines he becomes the winner and takes the bank.
In the game ‘3×3″ there some more possibilities. For example, while making bets, players can change them – double for example to get the opportunity to take out not 1 but 2 cards and so on.
3. Playing alone. When you desire to master your katakana or hiragana skills you can easily do this. Just take one or more game boards. Do not forget to use a tip-page for checking your answers. Take the cards one by one and try to find out if you have it and how to name it. Then fill in the board one by one!

” Look, Eleanor, put it this way. When people believed the Earth was flat, the idea of a round world scared them silly. Then they found out how the round world works. It’s the same with the world of the supernatural. Until we know how it works, we’ll continue to carry around this unnecessary burden of fear. “
-Dr. John Markway from The Haunting of Hill House (1963) “What is a ghost? An emotion, a terrible moment condemned to repeat itself over and over? An instant of pain, perhaps? Something dead which appears at times alive. A sentiment suspended in time … like a blurry photograph … like an insect trapped in amber.” -The Devil’s Backbone
If there is a place on the Earth where all kinds of ghousts and demons can be found it is Japan.

Vampire edition!
“They themselves do not see the world of light as we do, but our shapes cast shadows in their minds, which only the noon sun destroys: and in the dark they perceive many signs and forms that are hidden from us: then are they are most to be feared. And at all times they smell the blood of living things, desiring and hating it. Senses, too, there are other than sight or smell. We can feel their presence – it troubled our hearts, as soon as we came here, and before we saw them; they feel ours more keenly. “
My tendency is towards being inclusive rather than exclusive when it comes to vampires and to Japan.
Vampires… Children of dark side of the moon…Knights of the night… Demons…Whatever they are they ecites minds for centuries.
