TOWNE STREET THEATRE is kicking off it’s 2015 Season with it’s 8th Annual 10 Minute Play Festival. And, this year it’s all about the Ladies! In our efforts to get back to our original mission to create greater social impact in the community, this year we have moved the Ten-minute Play Festival from Black History Month to Women’s Month. This allows us to tackle the many themes (Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, relationships, sexual harassment, etc.) that are very relative to urban communities and it’s also a wonderful way to present work that people would not necessarily see African Americans in.
Many of the plays that were selected were quite generic and not specifically written for African Americans, so it was especially refreshing and interesting because the playwrights were so open and willing to adapt their work to fit our company aesthetic. Which is truly what diversity is about and is what TOWNE STREET THEATRE is about. It’s incredible, this Festival began eight years ago in a little coffee shop in LA and we’ve been running with it ever since! It started as a one day event. Then a weekend. And now, it’s three weeks!
TOWNE STREET THEATRE was founded as a response to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots and one emphasis was to find more roles for women. Oddly enough, it is the very first time that we are doing a festival about women during Women’s Month. So we are grateful for the opportunity to bring our mission full circle. Over the years we have expanded and diversified so much so that we are able to cast mostly from within which is awesome because everyone gets involved…acting in a piece, writing in a piece, producing a piece…wearing many, many, hats, helping to create a fantastic synergy:)
What DOES supporting this campaign mean? TOWNE STREET THEATRE is a 501 (c) non profit organization. Your support is a gesture towards DIVERSITY in the arts. Which is a gesture towards promoting SOCIAL CHANGE through the arts. WHY??? Because the URBAN perspective matters, because ACTIVISM creates social awareness, and because an EDUCATED society promotes a more TOLERANT and PROACTIVE one. And, because we cannot go at it alone. It takes a team effort that translates into a beautiful collaboration between the company and our valued supporters…and we THANK YOU from the bottom of hearts, in advance for your GENEROSITY & SUPPORT!!!
WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU BECAUSE IT REALLY DOES TAKE A VILLAGE!!
