Rad’est Battery in the Business

Our specialty is battery and electric motor technology and we understand you want to commute to and from work, climb hills, stand-your-own in traffic and get to your destination faster. We have what you want and it’s 48 volts and 750 watts of clean power.

48 volts and 750 watts of power results in an electric fat bike capable of tackling terrain and going the distance unlike the lower power and voltage options on the market.

Unlike more common electric bikes with low capacity 36 volt batteries, we focused on the RadRover battery packs because we know that this is the single most important component of any electric bike. The Samsung 48 volt 11.6 Ah battery packs a punch, and has the capacity and range to be there for you when you need it most at the end of a long ride. At only 7 pounds this is one of the lightest and most energy dense battery packs ever supplied on an electric bike. Combine that with the external battery meter, USB accessory charger, and easy removal for charging and transport, and you have got a feature rich battery pack you can depend on.

Brushless Geared Hub Motor

A hub motor also called an in-wheel motor is an electric motor incorporated into the hub of the wheel. These motors are compact, maintenance free, and discreet. Hub motors are the most common drive method for ebikes today and offer a number of advantages.

We applied our experience with years of taking ebike motors to their limits in high performance applications and have outfitted the RadRover with a powerful all-around lightweight brushless geared hub motor specifically designed for use with our 15 amp continuous motor controller and 48 volt battery pack.

Key Points:

  • The motor is mounted in the rear wheel which increases traction when starting on hills and provides greater stability compared to front hub motors.
  •  An internal planetary gear provides ample starting torque and a high top speed while keeping the weight of the bike low for floating over snow and sand. Geared hub motors have internal gears which allow the high speed and high efficiency motor inside to match the speed of the low speed 26” wheels.
  • Geared hub motors typically weigh around 50% less than a direct drive hub motor with similar performance.
  • The motor also includes and internal freewheel which means when the motor is off and you are just pedaling the resistance is greatly reduced and it feels more like pedaling a regular bike.
  • The compact hub motor is so small most people will not even know it’s there until you fly by them on a hill!

Full Shimano 7 speed gearing

Oh yeah, and it’s a bike, so you can use the pedals too! The 7 speed Shimano drive train lets you ride any terrain. 7 speeds allow you to match you peddling speed, terrain, and motor speed, so you are always in the perfect gear. You can comfortably pedal from a stop and also keep up with the 750 watt power system in the tallest gear.

Aluminum Frame

A lightweight 6061 aluminum frame balances style, efficiency, and comfort into a bike that is exceptionally durable but feels nimble and quick under your feet. The upright geometry allows experienced and novice riders to feel comfortable and safe while being able to easily take in the sights with the heads up and laid back frame features.

Suspension Fork

If the big bouncy 4’’ wide Kenda fatbike tires were not enough to smooth your path, the suspension fork brings you unparalleled comfort not found on traditional rigid Fat Bikes. You will love the way this bike feels!

Key Points:

  • Preload Adjustment: The RadRover suspension for includes a preload adjustment knob to tune the forks for your weight and riding style.
  • Lockout: The fork also has a handy lockout knob which allows you to go from active front suspension to rigid with the flip of the knob. Lockout is commonly used by off road cyclists when they are riding on the road to increase pedaling efficiency.

Fat Tires

Fat tires help the bike float through snow, sand, mud, and any terrain you may come across. This opens the door to epic rides into wild places not normally accessible by conventional electric bikes. The big tires feel equally at home on tarmac and make the little bumps in the pavement disappear on your cruise down the street. The fat tires provide better traction making you feel like your tire is gripping the ground which is especially nice during higher speed turns.

Customizable Fit

The RadRover uses a standard 27.2 mm seat post and 1 1/8’’ steerer tube allowing you to customize the fit and feel of the bike using parts found at your local bike shop. Get your favorite low rise stem to get aerodynamic or that crazy big seat that feels like riding an electric powered couch, you name it, get Rad!

Leather Grips and a Plush Saddle

There’s more? You got that right! We added leather ergo grips and a matching comfort saddle with alloy rails.

Remote Controlled LED Headlight

If all of the features above weren’t enough, you can even turn the integrated high-powered LED headlight on with the press of a button to light the path ahead on your next adventure. This premium LED headlight runs straight off the main lithium battery pack for convenience and security. Never get left in the dark.

Powerful Brakes for a Powerful Bike

Front and rear Tektro disk brakes provide you with strong stopping power in mud, sleet, and sand. Stop faster when it counts the most.

Motor Safety Cutoff Switch

Both brake levers automatically cut-off the motor power when they are applied to keep you safe in even the most surprising situations.

Stainless Steel Spokes and Double Wall Rims

Feel confident on bumpy roads with the RadRover wheel sets. The strong stainless steel spokes mean your wheel will stay stronger longer than conventional ebike wheel sets. The added load of the motor and batteries means you need a wheelset that can hold up to all the bumps you can throw at them.

An all-purpose ebike, the RadRover is for everyone: Weekend warriors, commuters, technophiles, bicycle lovers, those with an overwhelming inner child and people who want to make a change to a more sustainable mode of transportation. The RadRover got its origins from our earliest off-road performance electric bikes designed for the hills of Northern California but just because it is built for tackling hills, doesn’t mean it’s not a perfect match for an afternoon cruise on the local bike paths or crushing your daily commute without the sweat.

The RadRover is an ebike enthusiast approved electric bike and we would love to have you join us to take one for a spin during one of our test ride meetups during the campaign. Come chat with us about what we love most (electric bikes) and get your EV-grin on!

We will be having two meetups in Seattle during the campaign — One in the middle, and one in the last week of the campaign in case folks miss out or can’t make it to the first ride session. Email us at [email protected] to sign up and get the details.

The RadRover is a complete production ebike ready to start flying off the assembly line into your hands and under your feet. Our supply chain consists of experienced personal business contacts in U.S. and China to ensure our production order goes off without a hitch. The project timeline below explains the process in more detail.

The RadRover is ready for mass production and Indiegogo is the perfect place to reward early adopters and help generate more buzz for the ebike revolution. His daily commuter is a lightweight titanium 60 volt electric hard tail, but since the arrival of the first RadRover production samples, we have not been able to get him off them!

  • Choose white or black frame color at the end of the campaign.
  • Shipping cost is not included but we will work to find the lowest cost shipping option to your door.
  • Local pickup is available free of charge in Seattle, WA.

Like any production run we will be exposed to supply chain delays. The Seattle Port where the first production batch will be received has been easing its way back to full pace after the longshoreman strikes earlier this year caused serious delays.

Because of the restrictions on the shipment of lithium battery packs by both ground and air methods in the US and internationally, we have to take ample care in ensuring we meet all regulations in the safe transport of each RadRover to the end user. This is an important step that many new e-bike companies are unaware of, but this is not our first rodeo! We have already gone through the HazMat and Dangerous goods shipping certification processes are up to date on the most recent regulations and compliance requirements. We have been shipping and receiving lithium battery packs with a variety of carriers safely and quickly for the past 7 years so rest assured this is one road block that we will fly right through.

How far can I go? What is the distance I can go on a single charge?

There are many variables that effect exactly how far you will be able to travel on a single charge like wind, hills, payload, and speed. We get an average range of 25 miles per charge in commute/urban environments with a 180 pound rider with no peddling and 15-20 miles in hilly off-road trail riding conditions with no peddling. When you pedal you extend your range. The more peddling you do, the less power the radrover will consume, and the longer you will be able to travel! With battery gauges located on the display and battery pack you will always know your state of charge

How fast does it go?

The RadRover has a top speed of 20 MPH without pedaling. The 48 volt battery pack and high torque geared hub motor means you go from 0-20 MPH rapidly but the bike is limited to a 20 MPH top speed, which is the legal limit in most states for use on road.

How much power does it have?

The RadRover has 750 watts of power on demand. The LCD meter provides a continuous display of power consumption while you are riding.

How do you control the motor?

The RadRover is equipped with both a throttle and a pedal sensor. You can use either systems to control the speed of the electric motor. If you want to cruise without pedaling the twist throttle can be used or if you enjoy pedaling and want to feel more like you are riding a regular bike (with an awesome silent electric motor) you can use the pedal sensor.

What is pedal assist, how does it work and why does the RadRover have it?

Pedal assist uses a cadence sensor built into the drivetrain of the ebike which reads when you are peddling and automatically turns the electric motor on to provide assistance, only when you are pedaling. Start pedaling and the sensor tells the motor to turn on. You can adjust the level of assistance with the LCD screen from 1 (lowest amount of assistance) to 5 (highest amount of assistance) to match your desired speed. Since you have to pedal, using the RadRover in pedal assist mode will generally result in a longer range compared to throttle only mode.

How many charges will my battery last for?

RadRovers Samsung lithium-ion battery cells will provide approximately 800 “full” charge cycles before a replacement is recommended. A full cycle is considered one complete discharge, so if you only discharge the battery halfway before recharging normally, your battery will last for twice as many trips!

Does the battery have a memory effect?

No. The battery has no memory effect unlike other battery chemistries meaning you can charge your battery after each and every use, even if you just take a spin down the block. The battery is completely self managing and the charger stops automatically when the battery is fully charged

How long does it take to charge the battery?

On average the battery takes 4-6 hours to charge with the included 2 amp charger, but that time is cut in half on shorter trips where you only partially discharge the battery pack.

Do I have to pedal?

No. There is both a throttle and a pedal assist system. You can pedal and the electric motor will kick in and provide you with assistance, and there is also a twist throttle that will override the pedal assist and allow you to ride the Rover more like a motorcycle, only silent!  The level of pedal assistance will determine how much boost power the motor provides based on your peddling input. Level 1 will be just a little and level 5 will get you moving like a pro cyclist. The throttle is always 0-100% power depending on how much you twist yo wrist!

What colors are available?

At the end of the campaign we will send you a backer survey where you will be able to select the white or black frame model.

Does the RadRover have regenerative braking?

No. Instead of using a brushless direct drive hub motor which would allow the RadRover to have regenerative braking enabled, we opted for a geared hub motor which increases the efficiency on hills and at lower speeds. The geared hub motor also freewheels when you are coasting or just peddling making it feel more like peddling a regular bike without fighting cogging/magnetic resistance.

Is it street legal?

Electric bikes are considered bicycles and can be used in the same way as a pedal only bicycle in most locations, however there are a multitude of localities with restrictions so users must check with local law enforcement to be sure they are riding within the law. One example is NYC which has had a ban on the use of electric bikes http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1084757_nyc-bans-electric-bikes-again-launches-bike-sharing-system

Users should take extra care ensuring that they operate within the law and check their local regulations on peak power (normally 750 watts in the U.S.) and top speeds (normally 20 mph in the U.S.). For reference the RadRover has a top speed of 20 MPH and a peak power of 750 watts.

We will be providing an on/off throttle button on the production bikes to disable the twist grip throttle so customers in locations where e-bikes with throttles are not allowed (some locations in Europe etc) will be able to conform to local regulations. The pedal assist system is still fully functional when the throttle is disabled.

It is our job as ebikers to obey the rules of the road so please ride responsibly. Here is an additional link to read about laws pertaining to the operation of electric bicyles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_bicycle_laws

How do you turn the RadRover On/Off?

The RadRover turns on once you depress the battery “on” button and turn on the display by holding down the mode button for 2-3 seconds.

What is the size of the bike?

It uses 26’’ fat bike wheels and tires and the frame is a unisex design meaning it fits a wide range of individuals. The frame is closest to an 18’’ frame on a conventional frame sizing chart and from our experience it fits well for people between 5’2’’ and 6’2’’ tall. The axles are 46.5’’ apart and the outside of the front tire to the outside of the rear tire is 77’’

Does it come in a women’s specific version?

The RadRover uses a unisex design frame meaning it works well for men and women. If you find that the seat is too high for you upon arrival a shorter seatpost can be installed or the provided seatpost can be cut down by a quality local bike shop.

What is the weight limit?

The weight limit for the RadRover is 275 lbs including rider and extra gear.

Can I put a rear rack on it?

Some racks fit, but the wide rear tires require you to choose carefully when picking out a rear rack. Racks that connect directly to the seat post are the easiest to install, but do not have the payload of some full featured rear racks.

How Steep of a hill can the bike go up?
Hill performance depends on the weight of rider and gear and the steepness of the hill as well as some other factors. The 48 volt 15 amp continuous motor controller surprises everyone we have had test ride the RadRover, the hill climbing power is what distinguishes our bikes from competitors with lower voltage battery packs, lower current controllers, and higher speed motor windings.

What is the lowest and highest the seat sits off the ground?
With the seat post fully extended the top of the comfort saddle sits 43’’ from the ground and at its lowest point the seat is 34’’ from the ground.

How much does the bike weigh?

The bike weighs 60.8 lbs out of the box.

How much does the battery pack weigh?
The battery weighs exactly 7 pounds.

How many gears does the Rad Rover have and why does it have gears if it is electric?
The rad rovers has a thumb shift Shimano 7 speed gearing system. Although we find that users rarely change gears because the electric motor takes away all the strain, it is still useful to have gears whenever you decide to pedal while cruising or trying to get more exercise or extend your range. The combination of gearing and the 5 levels of variable pedal assistance from the motor means you can always find the most efficient gear and pedal level to go the distance!

Is there a switch to prevent accidental starting?

Yes, there is an on/off button on the battery pack and an on/off button on the LCD remote. The brake levers also come standard with a safety power stop switch built in.

How do I lock it up and what can I do to help minimize the chance of it being stolen?

The RadRover has some great anti-theft features including a locking battery pack that can either be locked onto the frame or removed and brought inside for charging and safe keeping and wheels which are bolted down to the dropouts to reduce the chances of a thief stealing the wheel from the bike. Most standard u-locks and cable locks work fine on the RadRover.

Does it work in the rain?

The components are all water resistant and work very well in wet conditions but you should take care to keep your bike parked indoors whenever possible and in a dry location when in storage. The display, motor, battery pack, and throttle are all designed to operate just fine in a normal drizzle or a soggy wet morning commute in Seattle, but you should always take care to dry off your bike and store it properly between use.

How do I pick the frame color?

After the campaign ends we will send you a backer survey with a few questions to process your order quickly and efficiently including what color you would like and to confirm your shipping address so we can calculate shipping.

Are there any other options other than color?

No, but additional accessories will be available from radpowerbikes.com once the campaign is over.

How will you deliver the bikes to Burning Man for the Playa Special backers?

Since tickets and vehicle passes are tight and it is a crazy venue to try and pull of the logistics of delivery, we are looking for help from burners that want to get involved and help facilitate delivery to backers that want to have the RadRover for the 2015 burn. We could set someone up with a camp inside to help distribute or even meet in a neighboring town ahead of time. We can also ship the bikes to you ahead of your journey out to BRC. We want to make it work because the RadRovers would be an awesome complement for the desert environment.

Are there any other important details for the Playa Special backers?

–  If you just want a bike with the Nori wheel lights but will not be attending the burn, no problem at all, just let us know in a message.

–  We will gladly provide provide support to burners using the RadRover on the Playa but due to the nature of the dust and potential for resulting damage to the electrical components (and normal bike components for that matter!) we cannot provide warranty coverage on parts damaged by the environmental abuse/corrosion from the dust on the Playa.

–  We have been built bikes for Burning Man attendees in past years and found the dust to be highly abusive to the electrical system on Ebikes but if properly cared for (cleaned, covered when parked, and treated with ample care) they have lasted for many seasons.

What happens if something breaks on my RadRover?

Our ebikes use standard bicycle components meaning replacement parts can be found at any local bike shop (LBS). All of the electrical components are easily swappable in case you need a replacement, or want to upgrade your battery in coming years. The RadRover is so smart that it’s electrical system will actually tell you what is wrong in the case of an error. The LCD readout displays an error code when a component is at fault allowing you to pinpoint the problem right away!

Does the RadRover have a warranty?

Every bike is covered under our manufacturers one year all-inclusive warranty for the original owner against all manufacturing defects.

Is it possible to replace the batteries?

Yes! The battery can be easily removed and replaced by a turn of a key to unlock the battery allowing you to lift it right off for replacement. Our high quality Samsung cells should provide years of dependable service but when a replacement, or spare pack is needed, it is as easy as unlock and lift!

What accessories will be available for purchase after the campaign?

We will have the following accessories available for purchase from our webstore once the bikes arrive. 1) Front and rear fenders 2) Rear rack 3) Tail lights 4) Spare tires 5) Replacement brake pads 6) Adjustable stem 7) Others as needed

Can I replace or add parts to the RadRover?

You can customize the RadRover however your heart desires, you can even deck it out like the bike from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. When purchasing parts check with your local bike experts or reach out to Rad Power Bikes if you have any questions about compatibility of new parts.

How do I replace the tires when they have worn?

The RadRover rims fit standard 26’’ fat bike tires and most bike shops carry replacement fat bike tires. You will also be able to purchase replacement tires directly from our web store upon campaign completion.

Can I pick my bike up in Seattle?
Yes! Local pickup is free and highly recommended, we would love to meet you!

How will my RadRover package look when it arrives?

Since the RadRover uses an ultra-cool lithium battery we have to adhere to strict shipping regulations covering battery shipments. This means that we have to ship each bike and battery separately meaning you will receive one large box with the RadRover and one smaller box with the 48 volt lithium battery pack. Once the RadRovers arrive we will be distributing them by UPS and FedEx with ground and air/express for backers looking to get on the saddle even faster.

Is Assembly Required?

The RadRover will arrive fully assembled, and you will just need to turn the handlebars and install the front wheel. We will be sending around an “Un-boxing and Steps Before Your First Ride” video before bikes start to arrive!

How much will shipping cost?

Shipping will be based on location and the # of bikes and other perks you have ordered. If you would like to contact us at [email protected] and provide us with your desired order items and your address we can email you a shipping quote! The more bikes that are ordered, the lower the shipping costs will be with quantity discounts with UPS and FedEx. For example if we sell 400 bikes shipping bwill be 10-20% less expensive for everyone. If we sell 1000 bikes shipping will be 20-30% less expensive (this is an estimate based on rate charts). If you are on the West Coast of the U.S. your shipping will likely be around $120-150 while east coast backers will be somewhere between $150-$190 (this is the base rates, the more bikes we sell better deal we will get on shipping and shipping discounts will be applied to backers.

How will we pay for shipping?

Shipping invoices will be payable with PayPal or over the phone with our sales department with any major credit card. A receipt will be sent to your email address and a tracking number will be sent to you once your package is shipped.

What countries will you ship to?

We can ship to most countries with UPS and FedEx. If we find that there are restrictions limiting our ability to ship into your country we will provide you with a refund on your order.
