Insight into your metabolic activity can be used in a number of ways, depending on your specific needs and goals. We have developed some consumer-oriented metrics that provide a few different useful perspectives.
The Glucose Variation Index™ is the primary metric we deliver. Excessive glucose in the blood and high glucose excursions have been linked to a number of health issues and the higher the glucose variation the worse the index and the more likely long term complications will result from poor diet and exercise. The lower the variability the better the diet and exercise programs and the better likelihood of good future health. All SugarSenz™ users will benefit from incorporating these insights into their lifestyle choices.
Glucose Rate Indicator™ is an exercise intensity indicator. The faster and deeper the drop in glucose during exercise, the higher the intensity of the exercise. This metric helps determine the intensity of metabolic demand during exercise, and will be used to prevent ‘hitting the wall’ or ‘bonking’ when doing endurance sports like cycling or running.
SugarSenz™ users who want to lose weight will appreciate the Total Daily Glucose Index™ and Glucose Meal Index™ metrics. TDGI can be either a glucose deficit (indicating weight loss) or glucose surplus (indicating weight gain). Combining this with glucose variability metrics could give one a much more complete understanding of their individual metabolic profile. GMI calculates this for each individual meal, deriving further feedback on your diet and meal selection. It is incredibly helpful to know how your body is responding at any given time, since other variables can influence the body’s response to food. It has been proven that the same meal can be eaten by the same individual at the same time of day and still you will derive two different glucose profiles, due to various physiologic factors. Therefore, being able to study patterns and the constant feedback provided by the SugarSenz™ can help you to develop a far deeper understanding of how your metabolism works.
For too long, people have been relying on measuring their heart rate to estimate and predict how many calories they burn. But correlation of heart rate with calories has only been proven accurate at higher heart rates and higher levels of exertion — resulting in a massive over-prediction of calories burned at low to moderate heart rates. A combination of glucose (either GRI or TDGI) and heart rate could be used to enhance the correlation of caloric burn at low to moderate exercise intensity, with unprecedented precision.

Robert Boock, PhD, CEO/CTO, previously served as the Senior Technical Director of Research and Development at Dexcom, where he was responsible for managing all long-term research including technology for their future generation sensor products. He was responsible for development of materials for Dexcom’s SEVEN PLUS and invented the entire G4 Platinum sensor and led its development and commercialization. He has over 20 years of medical device industrial experience and is an expert in materials and device/tissue interface and has invented and launched successful commercial products in numerous fields. Dr. Boock received his Doctorate in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He holds more than 44 patents and over 100 pending patents as well as having more than 25 peer reviewed journal articles.
Jeff Suri, PhD, VP Sensor Technologies, has 13 years of experience developing glucose sensing technologies and platforms. At Dexcom Dr. Suri served as a Senior Scientist where he led the hands-on development of next generation sensor technology. He played critical roles in fundamental membrane research, process development, and manufacturing of the G4 Platinum sensor, themost recent product launched by Dexcom. Prior to
Dr. Suri helped start GluMetrics, a company focused on developing a fluorescence-based glucose sensor for the critical care market. As Director of Chemistry and Sensor Technology he invented the core chemistry for a boronic acid based glucose sensor. Dr. Suri holds a PhD in organic chemistry from University of California, Santa Cruz. He carried out postdoctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute. He has presented at numerous conferences, has 4 issued and multiple pending patents in glucose sensing technology and over 20 publications in the fields of organic and polymer chemistry.
Ken San Vicente, VP Electronics and Software, has 30 years of experience in hardware/software systems development and previously served as a Principal Engineer at Dexcom where he was the systems architect and project lead for their latest generation transmitter/receiver system. He led a team responsible for building the sensor interface electronics, system firmware, glucose value generating algorithm,and wireless procol definition/implementation on the transmitter and corresponding receiver side wireless implementation and user interface cell phone application. Kenneth received his Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of California at Los Angeles and his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of California at Irvine and has 8 issued patents on wireless Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems.
